Hivemind: Thinking Alike in a Divided World | Sarah Rose Cavanagh
3 posts | 1 read | 3 to read
At the crossroads between THE SHALLOWS and NUDGE, HIVEMIND is a provocative exploration of our ultra-social selves during a challenging era. We have always been a remarkably social species-our moods, ideas, and even our perceptions of reality effortlessly synchronize with each other. The advent of social media and smartphones has amplified these tendencies in ways that spell both promise and peril. Tribes can coalesce around any topic, belief structure, or shared experience. This in-group bonding can be positive, as in the case of crowd funded campaigns to support natural disaster victims, but just it can also send us down a path of echo chambers and political polarization and conspiracy theories. Leading a narrative journey from a New England apiary to Charlottesville, from zombies to casinos to the boardrooms of Facebook, Cavanagh leaves no stone unturned in her quest to understand how social technology is reshaping our collective selves-and what we can do to come back from the polarized brink. Our emotions and decisions are tremendously influenced by the stories told by our self-selected communities, the narratives that shape our reality. Cavanagh's fascinating book samples work from as divergent fields as neuroscience and speculative fiction to find ways to cut through our online tribalism and move us back to the larger world. With compelling storytelling and shocking research, Hivemind is a must read for anyone struggling to make sense of the dissonance around us.

Just joined Hive as a Twitter replacement and I‘m @ rmmckenny on there. Anyone else over there?

WorldsOkayestStepMom How easy is Hive to navigate/use? I've seen a lot of fellow Twitter users moving over and am considering it for myself. 1y
MallenNC I haven‘t joined yet but I‘ve been considering it since I started seeing people talk about it. What do you think of it so far? 1y
rachelm @WorldsOkayestStepMom @MallenNC I really like it! Cute font, easy to navigate. It‘s a little laggy right now (growing pains) but the potential is there and it feels like a good Twitter alternative. 1y

marleed Oh I hope it‘s a successful alternative. I never did get that round tuit to create a Twitter account and in Twitter‘s current state I‘m glad that particular tuit never happened for me :) 1y

Pickpick

Lots to love in this book, in which psychologist and professor Cavanagh addresses tribalism and polarization, especially in social media spaces. I appreciated the elements of memoir and the bookishness (she references many novels and notes how fictional works of all types help us build empathy). Cool research connections, spot-on observations, good use of other expert voices, and a hopeful vibe. Definitely thought she could‘ve included more ⬇️⬇️

Christine insights and data from sociologists, but that is also definitely in part because I am one. 😆 (But almost all of the book‘s topics have been studied extensively by sociologists, so I do stand by my biased opinion. 😁) That plus some structural and editing things have me pondering the whole of this book relative the sum of its parts…but the parts were pretty great! 2y
