My experience with CHAINS AND MEMORY is a good example of why you should read sequels ASAP. Brennan constructs a solid legal narrative here as her magical characters fight to have their rights recognized—but she relies on work done in the first book, LIES AND PROPHECY, to provide the emotional hook. I enjoyed the story overall, but I know I‘d have gotten a lot more out of it if I‘d read it right after Book 1 instead of waiting 5 years.

I made my favourite warm Brussels sprout salad for supper, and I hit 47% with CHAINS AND MEMORY by Marie Brennan while I ate it. The book‘s a contemporary fantasy with a good legal component. It‘s also the sequel to something I really enjoyed 5 years ago but don‘t remember super well. I should‘ve reread LIES AND PROPHECY first to refresh my connection to the emotional side of the story.
