The Golden Acorn
The Golden Acorn: Book 1 | Catherine Cooper
4 posts | 6 read | 1 reading | 3 to read
When Jack Brenin finds a golden acorn lying in the grass, little does he know that it is the beginning of a thrilling and magical adventure. Just an ordinary boy, Jack has been chosen for a hugely important task, and enters a world he believed only existed in legend. Full of twists and turns, talking ravens and mischievous Spriggans, 'The Golden Acorn' is a hugely entertaining and exciting tale from a very talented new author. Your kids will love it, and so will you! This brilliant story deservedly won the Brit Writers' Awards 2010 for unpublished writers. Jacks adventures continue in 'Glasruhen Gate' and 'Silver Hill'.

I love middle grade fantasy. When it's done well, when the world is fanciful and immersive, it's so great. This is not that. The writing is amateurish (clearly no editor) and the characters are wooden. I was curious enough about what was going to happen to keep going, and it was a fast read (mostly because it didn't really matter how closely I paid attention), but the ending was so dull and disappointing.

monalyisha Bummer! What are some of your favorite MG fantasy books? 6y
Brooke_H @monalyisha Let‘s see...Flora & Ulysses, any Neil Gaiman aimed toward that age group, of course Harry Potter, Narnia, the Wrinkle in Time books... 6y
monalyisha @Brooke_H I approve! 🙌🏻 Have you read 6y
Brooke_H @monalysha No, but that looks great! I added it to my TBR. Thx! 6y

I don‘t really love this book, but it‘s a fast read, so I‘ll keep going. 🤷‍♀️

I made my last visit to one of my favourite bookshops today. It is a sadness to see another indie book seller shutter its doors after 25 years serving our community. Acorn will be missed! 💔
