The Vanishing Deep | Astrid Scholte
6 posts | 4 read | 3 to read
Astrid Scholte, author of Four Dead Queens, brings fans a thrilling new standalone YA where the dead can be revived...for a price. Tempest is a talented diver and with her older sister Elyssea, she has explored the ruins of many cities on the ocean floor, searching for anything of value to sell in the salt crusted markets on Zenith Reef. However, after Elyssea mysteriously drowns, Tempest is forced to dive and scavenge alone, barely scraping by. But when she finds a real living green plant at her dive site, an item so rare it is almost priceless, she finally has the money to have all her questions answered--by her dead sister. For the price of 3,000 notes, the research facility on the island of Palindromena will revive the departed for 24 hours before returning them to death. It is a time for the dead to make peace with the past and let the living move forward. Strong-willed Elyssea has other plans. Convincing Tempest to break her out of the facility, they embark on a dangerous adventure to find out the truth about their supposedly deceased parents, the secret behind the revival process, and the true price for restored life.

There's not only depth in the title, but also in this story. What would you do if you had the chance to see a passed loved one again? For 24 hours?
Scholte writes about guilt, family, friendship and of course about life and death. About what's important for us and how we might change when faced with the secrets of our own souls.

A standalone novel taking place in a dystopian world, most people are living on boats or floating reefs due to a great wave & rising oceans. Scholte has done an excellent job with the world building, pulling the reader into a descriptive & fairly credible future. Tempest has come up with the money needed to revive her dead sister for 24 hours, in an effort to try to find out what happened to their deceased parents.

Have you ever had a final cover reveal ruin your interest in a book. I am big cover art person, while I know ARC covers are never final I really liked the simplicity and font of this ARC cover and was hoping they would keep the same simplicity with the final cover. But instead they went with a huge image of a woman‘s head and boring blocky font written in water :/ it‘s so unappealing to me

Sweetkokoro It‘s not a cover type that draws my attention at all, these types are the ones I look over because it‘s boring to me. I know I shouldn‘t judge a book by its cover but I can‘t help it, I love cover art and if I‘m gonna buy it and have it on my shelf I want to actually like it haha. 4y
GrilledCheeseSamurai Yeah. It looks like a movie adaptation cover. 4y
Sweetkokoro @GrilledCheeseSamurai Yes!!!! That‘s it! That‘s exactly what it looks like, and it‘s so unappealing! 4y
TheBookKeepers Yes! Hate this cover! But the chapter preview I just read looks great so I may read it now haha!!! 4y
