The Ghost Collector
The Ghost Collector | Allison Mills

Ghosts aren't meant to stick around forever . . . Ghosts are everywhere in Shelly's life. Recently passed people, pets, and a boy who lives in the local graveyard and lends her Smiths tapes are all part of spirit world she and her grandmother are privy to. In the tradition of their Cree ancestors, Shelly and her grandmother help these lost souls transition to the next world by catching them in their hair. But when Shelly's mom dies, her relationship to ghosts--and death--changes. Instead of helping spirits move on, she starts bringing them home and hiding them in her room. But no matter how many ghosts she collects, Shelly can't ignore the one that's missing. Why hasn't her mom's ghost come home yet? Rooted in a Cree worldview and inspired by the author's great-grandmother's stories, The Ghost Collector delves into questions of grief, loss, and the many ways people can linger after death.

Like her Cree mother & grandmother, 10-year-old Shelly can see the ghosts of people & animals. She is learning how to catch them & help them move on. But tragedy strikes and Shelly must learn something even more challenging: how to handle grief. A gentle contemporary ghost story by a Ililiw/Cree author, for ages 9-12. #CanadianAuthor #Indigenous #kidlit

“My grandma is a ghost hunter,” Shelly says. “I‘m going to be one, too.”

So so lovely. This book navigates grief from a child‘s perspective, while touching on Cree culture and family traditions/ beliefs, poverty and class status, and stereotypes facing indigenous folks. You will care for Shelly so much as you feel her loneliness through the pages and as let‘s go. 100% recommend. Happy book birthday to Allison Mills! Now on sale.

This book is rooted in a Cree worldview and is based on stories of the author's great-grandmother's life. It starts light and fun and the concept of collecting ghosts in your hair is intriguing. Then the book takes a more serious turn as Shelly has to learn how to handle her own grief. Mills masterfully and uniquely handles the topics of death and grief in a way that is accessible to younger readers. #middlegradelit #readinginthemiddle #netgalley
