So so lovely. This book navigates grief from a child‘s perspective, while touching on Cree culture and family traditions/ beliefs, poverty and class status, and stereotypes facing indigenous folks. Really enjoyed this cute, breezy book for the end of summer. It kept me reading suspense-fully because there were so many questions I needed answered! There was some gender commentary I didn‘t appreciate but not enough to sour the reading experience.

Much like Mariko Tamaki‘s previous works, this is a snapshot of a specific experience that alters a girl‘s self-perception and opens opportunity for growth. There isn‘t a dramatic crescendo for plot, but rather continuous moments of deep introspection.
It‘s a highly emotional reading experience— I described this book to a friend as sad but nice. And soft, oh so soft 😭

Glad I‘m listening to the audiobook for this. The poetic writing is visual and gorgeous, but a bit dense. Subject matter about depression, suicide, and grief is heavy and I appreciate being able to listen on walks or during lunch to take it all in then decompress. Also love hearing pronunciations for the Mandarin and Taiwanese words. Definitely recommend so far

Loved the vivid details and explanations of game play, realistic characters, and measured pacing. Kept me intrigued and eagerly turning pages w/out overloading me w/ new information. Steph and Claire/Cicada were my faves— I‘d adore sequels about them!! Full of introspection and life-like scenarios, I went from being choked up to wanting to smack people throughout the story. Super strong debut & excited for future work 🤗 on sale 9/24/19

SO adorable! Love stories about kids reflecting on how they weren‘t their best self, then making things right. I enjoyed learning all about roller derby: it‘s so badass!

Stunning cover for a stellar debut! This was a fast read full of personality. The author crafts Simone‘s story with tenderness, honesty, and respect. Loving this #memoir. I don‘t know anything about butchery or what it takes to do the work. But growing up, I distinctly remember hating going to the grocery store because of the gross attention I‘d get at the meat counter (still do). It was always packed and my parents made me wait for our number while they grabbed the rest of our groceries. This book offers insight to the terrible sexism + misogyny in this industry from a worker‘s perspective.
