10 posts | 8 read | 14 to read
As if being small and having S. Horten as his name isn't bad enough, now 10-year-old Stuart is forced to move far away from all his friends. But on his very first day in his new home, Stuart's swept up in an extraordinary adventure: the quest to find his great-uncle Tony--a famous magician who literally disappeared off the face of the earth--and Tony's marvelous, long-lost workshop.

What a delightful surprise—from a spectacular cover & a crossword writer dad, to a plucky hero & the long lost magic workshop of a sort of famous magician, this story has a little of everything. Plus, a very sophisticated vocabulary. What‘s it about? After Stuart Horten & his family move, he discovers his great uncle was a magician & that he left a set clues that would lead to his treasure trove of magical tricks. Sure to be fun for young readers.

Stuart Horten‘s dad is a crossword puzzle writer and this might be the most brilliant of all the wonderful things about this fun, quirky little book. So fantastic!

I should mention Stuart is the main character...

Okay yes, I admit it, I‘m easily seduced by an interesting or beautiful or funny or simply, for whatever reason, eye-catching cover. Saw this one & you bet I picked it up. Then I opened it & in the 1st chapter of this delightful MG book read “perambulation”, “sylvan”, “incendiary”, & “probate”. Oh yeah, & there‘s a magician too! So, I feel really good about this book coming home with me to be read. One chapter in & it‘s crazy good fun!

I picked these up at a book sale a few months ago because the promise of magic+secret contraptions was too good to pass up. Hear my full review on Episode 15, available now. - A #thereadingwomen #hortensmiraculousmechanisms #middlereaders

Just finished! Fun adventure story with some family history to learn along the way. Stuart finds that sometimes it's okay to have help.

"Ah, there you are. I was just thinking of going for a brief perambulation. Would you like to come too?"
"Normally Stuart would rather have poured cold gravy over himself than go for a walk with his father."

I'm hooked now! ?
