Helliconia Spring
Helliconia Spring | Brian W Aldiss
2 posts | 2 read | 3 to read
The Hugo and Nebula Awardwinning author and Science Fiction Grand Master delivers a sweeping epic of a planet suffering deadly conditions of alternating extremes in this Nebula Award finalist Helliconia follows an eccentric orbit around a double-star system with a twenty-six-hundred-year cycle of very long seasons. As spring slowly breaks the brutally long winter, humans emerge from hiding and a long sequence of civilization and growth begins to repeat again, unbeknownst to the participants but watched by an orbiting satellite station, Avernus, created by Earth some centuries ago. Humans free themselves from slavery to the aboriginal Phagors, and religion and science flower and expand. Brian W. Aldiss has, for more than fifty years, continued to challenge readers minds with literate, thought-provoking, and inventive fiction. Helliconia Springs prescience with regard to climate change is nothing short of extraordinary.

Just found out that Brian Aldiss passed away. By some unknown confluence of events I was able to purchase a copy of Helliconia Spring signed by this British Hugo and Nebula award winning author for 50 cents at my local library's book sale several years ago. No one there had any idea it was #signed until I showed them.

He was a great writer and he will be missed.

Linear Why is there a stamp saying discard 7y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk @Linear The book had been part of the library's collection and they were selling their discards. It's a tiny library in the rural south too which contributes to the strangeness. 7y
Reggie I think there is always an outlier working at every library who pushes for and/or sneaks that "not the usual stuff." And sometimes they are the ones who everyone perceives as stuffy. It's a trip, but I'm thankful for them. 7y

Brian Aldiss won two Hugo awards and a Nebula, and I found a signed copy of Helliconia Spring on the 50 cent table at my rural NC library's summer discard sale. Craziness. #signed
