Marching With Aunt Susan
Marching With Aunt Susan: Susan B. Anthony and the Fight for Women's Suffrage | Claire Rudolf Murphy
2 posts | 2 read
An inspiring story of the fight for women's suffrage, based on the experiences of a real girl All Bessie wants is to go hiking with her father and brothers. But it's 1896, and girls don't get to hike. They can't vote either, which Bessie discovers when Susan B. Anthony comes to town to help lead the campaign for women's suffrage. Stirred to action, Bessie joins the movement and discovers that small efforts can result in small changes--and maybe even big ones. Inspired by the diary of the real Bessie Keith Pond, a ten-year-old girl who lived in California during the suffrage campaign, author Claire Rudolf Murphy and illustrator Stacey Schuett offer a thought-provoking introduction to the fight for women's rights. A story of hope and determination, Marching with Aunt Susan reminds readers that society cannot evolve unless people--even young people--dare to take a stand

Marching With Aunt Susan is a HF book written by Claire Rudolf Murphy and illustrated by Stacey Schuett. This book tells the story of a young girl named Bessie lived in 1896. This was when women could not do anything other than be wives and mothers. Bessie knew she wanted more out of life, but couldn‘t figure out what that was...until she met Susan B. Anthony. Read to see how Bessie finds herself and fights for women‘s rights. #ucflae3414su20

JessicaO This book can be used as a RA or S. Acting out or using props such as women‘s suffrage posters would really help with understanding for students! Below, I linked all types of lesson plans for different content areas that work well with this book. It is great to see the limitless potential that this book has. UDL 3.4 to maximize transfer and generalization and ESOL strategy #11 to place language in meaningful context work great for this book. 4y
Mazzole18 What a great book to introduce a hard topic to young readers. This is a part of our history that can have a lot of questions but I like how this can be presented from the book! 4y
DrSpalding What a great book to incorporate into a social studies unit especially in an election year. To know that we had women fight for our right to vote is some thing that our students should know. Helpful resource! 4y

Marching With Aunt Susan is a historical fiction picture book written by Claire Rudolf Murphy and illustrated by Stacey Schuett. This book is about Susan B Anthony‘s experiences and fight for woman‘s suffrage. It started with her papa not letting her go hiking with him and her brothers because “it‘s not ladylike” and “strenuous exercise is not for girls”.

alexblanco She was then determined to have a voice for women and created a suffrage parade, wrote letters and painted posters. A teaching strategy I would use for this book would be literature circle (LC). A UDL strategy I would use would be “optimize relevance, value, and authenticity” because woman‘s rights is a huge part of our nations history so I think it‘s important to recognize the value and relevance of it. 5y
alexblanco And ESOL strategy I would use would be “reinforce the key ideas I present again and again”. I‘d do this to make sure they understand the concept of women‘s rights and how it came about. #ucflae3414f19 the standard that I would use for this book would be “describe how characters in a story respond to major events and challenges.” https://www.cpalms.org/Public/PreviewStandard/Preview/5692 5y
Erinehart I think this is a great book choice especially when teaching about the woman‘s right movement. 5y
katiehamlin I really like the standard you used for this book. It seems like it would go along with it very well! 5y
DrSpalding An excellent book to use during social studies instruction. 5y
