The Ballad of Mulan
The Ballad of Mulan | Song Nan Zhang
1 post | 1 read
A retelling of a Chinese folktale, based on a poem from the Sung Dynasty, in which a young girl disguises herself as a man and leads the army of China to victory against the enemy. The Sung version of the poem is incorporated into the illustrations in Wei Tablet Style calligraphy and "The Ballad of Mulan" appears in simplified Chinese characters as the last page of text.

The TL book is Song Nan Zhang‘s retelling of the well-known story of Mulan, a young woman in China who goes to fight in the war in her father‘s place, since he is elderly and likely wouldn‘t come back alive. To do this, she has to dress up as a man, and stays that way for 10 years. This book would be good for S and DR. #UCFLAE3414F19

JennaMichelleCohn ESOL strategy 4, “link lesson topic to student‘s prior knowledge,” would work here since most know the story of Mulan. A good UDL would be 3.1, “activate or supply background knowledge,” and 8.1, “heighten salience if goals and objectives,” since the stakes are so high in this story. 5y
JennaMichelleCohn https://www.cpalms.org/Public/PreviewResourceLesson/Preview/29355 CPALMS provides a great lesson plan for this book, focused on reading comprehension, and key details including setting and characters, and even works a bit on writing opinion pieces. 5y
DrSpalding Using the FLDOE website for teachers is a wise choice. Most children will have only seen the Disney version and I like that you have selected this picture book to show them that this is true traditional literature. 5y
