Author Pullman was born with a facial deformity that has always affected his life and how others see and treat him. This book absolutely must be approached with caution when reading to children as it deals with the heavy themes of aging, illness, and death. This well-known poetry book written and illustrated by Shel Silverstein is a great way to get kids interested in poetry. Typically when we think of poetry, we think of it being too boring, advanced, and confusing. When I was a kid, I was introduced to Shel Silverstein books and found them to be the complete opposite. This RF book won Mo Willems the 2005 Caldecott Honor. Trixie goes to the laundromat with her dad when she realizes her beloved stuff bunny is missing. This book would be great for RA and S. Robert McCloskey‘s book won the 1949 Caldecott Medal book for these great illustrations. This fantasy book follows a young boy (Sal) and his mother as they go blueberry picking. This RF by Jacqueline Woodson really pulls at the heart strings. A young girl named Chloe is unwelcoming to the new girl Maya. After Maya faces months of bullying, their teacher decides to teach a lesson on kindness, which gives Chloe a change of heart, only it‘s too late. This book won the 2013 Coretta Scott King Award, and would be great for RA and PR. #ucflae3414f19

I absolutely love this biography following the bear, Winnie, who was the inspiration behind Winnie The Pooh. Winnie was found at a train station, spend some time in the military, and eventually moved to live in a zoo where she met Christopher Robin. This story is so heartwarming I had to buy my own copy. Illustrator Sophie Blackall designed such an adorable, lovable bear, and it won her the 2016 Caldecott Medal. #UCFLAE3414F19

This HF book follows a lighthouse keeper throughout the years. His life changes drastically as time goes by, but the lighthouse remains constant. The illustrations created by Sophie Blackall won her the 2019 Caldecott Medal. This book would be great for PR & RA. UDL 1.1, “Offer ways of customizing the display of information,” works here, because each page is so different than the last in terms of how the information is organized. #UCFLAE3414F19

This SF story is in second person POV similar to the “If You Give A Mouse a Cookie” franchise. It walks you through what might happen if an alien were to appear outside your window. This would be great for DR as there are many interesting things happening quickly throughout. This HF book follows a young girl as she relives her best childhood memories while living in the mountains. In 1983 it won the title of Caldecott Honor Book. This story would do best as storytelling. This 2012 Caldecott winner, B book follows a little girl named Jane who loves learning about nature and wildlife. She loved the story of Tarzan and Jane and is fascinated by Africa. This TL book written by Frances Minters and illustrated by G. Brian Karas is a modern retelling of Cinderella. In this version, Elly is invited to a basketball game, but her older sisters prevent her from going because she is too young. When her godmother comes and persuades her to go with new clothes and glass shoes, she heads off and meets a basketball player while in disguise. #UCFLAE3414F19

The TL book is Song Nan Zhang‘s retelling of the well-known story of Mulan, a young woman in China who goes to fight in the war in her father‘s place, since he is elderly and likely wouldn‘t come back alive. To do this, she has to dress up as a man, and stays that way for 10 years. This book would be good for S and DR. #UCFLAE3414F19

This NF book by Seymour Simon explores the intriguing world of crocodilians, and compares and contrasts the similarities and differences between the different crocodilians, including crocodiles, alligators, caimans, and gharials. This would work best as IR or PR. ESOL strategy 45, “Use Venn diagrams to contrast and compare activities,” would work perfectly here. #UCFLAE3414F19

This F book follows Princess Elizabeth, who is completely enamored with the snobby but charming Prince Ronald. When Ronald is snatched up by a dragon who destroys her castle & her clothes, she puts on the only thing she can find: a paper bag, & heads off to save Prince Ronald. This is one of my absolute favorite books, as it teaches the importance of self love & self worth, & not to allow people to make you feel bad about yourself #UCFLAE3414F19

This HF book by Mary Pope Osborne takes the reader on another one of Jack & Annie‘s adventures through The Magic Treehouse. The two characters find themselves aboard the Titanic on the night it hits the iceberg. This book would be great for LC. EL 20 would work here & serve as an opportunity for teachers to highlight unknown words and take time going over them. UDL 3.1 would allow for an opportunity to supply background knowledge. #UCFLAE3414F19

This B book details the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. This book was awarded the Coretta Scott King Award and the Jane Addams Children‘s Book Award among others. This book would be great for AS and RA. This RF book by Mary Logue follows a young child who doesn‘t want to go to sleep. Her parents help her fall asleep by explaining how all of the other animals in the world fall asleep in their own ways. The beautiful illustrations by Pamela Zagarenski earned this book the 2013 Caldecott award. This book would be good for RT, RA, and DR. #UCFLAE3414F19

This fantasy story is near and dear to my heart because it was a poem written by my grandmother, Joan Yingling, in the 60s, and then turned into a children‘s book after she passed. It is BRAND NEW! It has only been in stores for a few weeks! This story would be FABULOUS for RA and RT! The story follows “Can‘t” who believes he can‘t do anything right like the “Could”s can. This fantasy book would be great for fourth-sixth grade teachers to have in their classroom library. The story follows a society who has convinced the citizens they need to leave a baby as a sacrifice to a witch every year. However, the witch is actually a good witch and saves the babies. It would be great for LC because there is so much to discuss. It would also be great for IR because it‘s a book that‘s easy to get invested in. #UCFLAE3414F19
