Turtle and Tortoise Are Not Friends | Mike Reiss
1 post | 2 read
Two sworn enemies learn that they have more in common than meets the eye, and its never too late to make a new friendeven if it takes decades! Ever since they were little hatchlings, Turtle and Tortoise decided that theyd forever be separated due to their different shells. As years and years go by, the two reptiles stay on opposites side of the pen and embark on their own adventures, while holding an everlasting grudge. Until one day, Turtle and Tortoise get into a bit of pickle and need each others help! This hilarious and heartwarming picture book from Merry Un-Christmas author Mike Reiss and The Most Magnificent Thing creator Ashley Spires is perfect for fans of unlikely pairs such as Frog and Toad Are Friends by Arnold Lobel, Duck and Bear from Jory Johns Goodnight Already!, and Boy + Bot by Ame Dyckman. Turtle has a smooth shell. Tortoise has a rough shell. Goodness gracious! How can they possibly be friends?!

Turtle and Tortoise Are NOT Friends is a F picture book written by Mike Reiss and illustrated by Ashley Spires. This picture book would be best as a RT in a grade 1-3 classroom. Although it hasn‘t won any awards, I still feel this book is a good one to incorporate into the classroom. #UCFLAE3414F19

katiehamlin It is about two eggs in a zoo cage exhibit that hatch, but once they find out they are different because they are a turtle and a tortoise, they decide they cannot be friends. Eventually when they are in a sticky situation, they learn to put aside their differences and come together to achieve a common goal. 5y
katiehamlin The EL strategy I would use with this book is 2. Promoting cooperation with small groups is good for this because they can work together to create readers theatres in small groups and then share them with the class. 5y
katiehamlin The UDL principle I would use is 1.1. “Offer ways of customizing the display of information” is good for this because it would be used as a readers theatre. Readers theatre is a way to provide the information in a different way visually and audibly. 5y

katiehamlin The resource I would use with this book is https://www.nashvillezoo.org/our-blog/posts/turtles-vs-tortoises . This website tells the differences between turtles and tortoises and has a little quiz at the end the students can do. I like this website because it is a good way to inform the students of science information while using this fun book in the classroom. 5y
kgarzon I love the idea of educating students of the differences between these two easily confused animals through a funny read-aloud like this :) 5y
DrSpalding I would love to see this as a readers theater! What a cool resource using a zoo website. 5y
