This is an excellent overview of the period. It focuses on political history, not so much cultural history, but it filled a lot of gaps for me. Having studied music history, the cultural aspects are familiar. European history has been a project of mine in retirement. I‘ve done medieval and Renaissance, so now it‘s on to modern Europe.

Lcsmcat It‘s amazing how much history there is in “music history” when it‘s well taught, isn‘t it? I knew things for my Western Civ class because of my music history professor more than my history professor. 6y
Lynnsoprano @Lcsmcat I had an amazing professor for music history as an undergrad, plus music majors two full years of it. I loved it so much, that‘s what I did my masters in. Even though I only had a couple of “real” history courses, I got inducted into the history honorary. 6y
Lcsmcat @Lynnsoprano We did two years of music history too. First year (up to Beethoven) was taught by a genius- and I don‘t use that word lightly. Second year, I had the Dean and she read from the back of record jackets. 🤦🏻‍♀️ But I learned so much from the first guy! 6y
Lynnsoprano @Lcsmcat Where did you go to school? I‘m really curious because so many schools just have a one year survey for music majors. 6y

Tuesday coffee and books date got moved to Monday this week. I‘m going to need a new book date book pretty soon. Almost through this chunkster.

Hubby had an early morning doctor appointment that involved fasting blood work, so it‘s a late breakfast with our books.

Another Tuesday, another coffee and books date with hubby. Working my way through this well written history.

I put this down almost two years ago because, after finishing the author‘s book on the medieval world, I plunged right into this, and just got bogged down. Not sure what prompted me to pick it up again, but I‘m remembering why I like Bauer‘s approach and style. A good choice for books and coffee with hubby.

#coffeeandbooks My husband and I have missed our Tuesday morning coffee stop the last few weeks, but made up for it today. And one of the things I like about Bauer's books is that, because she writes short, concise chapters that each tell its own story, you can pick the book up after a break and get right back into it.

When my daughter, @Ambrosnazzy grabbed Bauer's medieval volume from our library, it reminded me that it was probably time to pick this one up again. I have problems with the idea of beginning a renaissance history in the 12th century, but that's because I think of historical periods in terms of music history. There's a lot material to digest here, generally best taken in small bites, I find.

MrBook Interesting how you designate via musical reference. I like it 😁👍🏻! I read Bauer's Ancient History book, and I have Medieval and Renaissance in my Audible queue. 8y
