Brothers at Bat
Brothers at Bat: The True Story of an Amazing All-Brother Baseball Team | Audrey Vernick
1 post | 1 read
The Acerra family had sixteen children, including twelve ball-playing boys. It was the 1930s, and many families had lots of kids. But only one had enough to field a baseball team . . . with three on the bench! The Acerras were the longest-playing all-brother team in baseball history. They loved the game, but more important, they cared for and supported each other and stayed together as a team. Nothing life threw their way could stop them. Full of action, drama, and excitement, this never-before-told true story is vividly brought to life by Audrey Vernick’s expert storytelling and Steven Salerno’s stunning vintage-style art.

Brothers at Bat by Audrey Vernick is a great picture book that tells the true story of an amazing all-brother baseball team. This story would be great for an IR who loves to read about sports! The authors website, http://www.audreyvernick.com/brothers-at-bat/, is a great resource to download a discussion guide for this story. The ESOL Strategy that would be appropriate for this story is Teach think, pair, and share in cooperative groups.

BRaulerson For an ESOL student I would pair them up with someone to help read and understand the story together. We could use the UDL guideline of activation or supplying background knowledge for what they already know about the sport. #UCFLAE3414F19 5y
DrSpalding I own this book and have visited the baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown New York! The story is phenomenal. Excellent choice and it will truly assist most students with text to world or text to self connections. 5y
