Five Wives
Five Wives: A Novel | Joan Thomas

FINALIST FOR THE GOVERNOR GENERAL'S LITERARY AWARD FOR FICTION In the tradition of The Poisonwood Bible and State of Wonder, a novel set in the rainforest of Ecuador about five women left behind when their missionary husbands are killed. Based on the shocking real-life events In 1956, a small group of evangelical Christian missionaries and their families journeyed to the rainforest in Ecuador intending to convert the Waorani, a people who had never had contact with the outside world. The plan was known as Operation Auca. After spending days dropping gifts from an aircraft, the five men in the party rashly entered the “intangible zone.” They were all killed, leaving their wives and children to fend for themselves. Five Wives is the fictionalized account of the real-life women who were left behind, and their struggles – with grief, with doubt, and with each other – as they continued to pursue their evangelical mission in the face of the explosion of fame that followed their husbands’ deaths. Five Wives is a riveting, often wrenching story of evangelism and its legacy, teeming with atmosphere and compelling characters and rich in emotional impact.

Mehso-so

This book is well written. The author took care to represent the facts correctly. I found it difficult to read about these Christians. As I should I suppose.

I randomly picked this up on #Netgalley and really liked it. It‘s based on the true story of missionaries in the 1950‘s who conceitedly believe that an isolated native tribe in Ecuador needed to be saved. It is well written with a propulsive plot and you can tell the author did a lot of research.

I was absolutely enthralled by this book, right from the get go. Inspired by the true story of five missionaries who were killed in the Ecuadorian Amazon and the families left behind, Five Wives examines the dark legacy of missionaries and colonialism and the dangerous consequences of good intentions. The characters are not likeable, but they are completely and genuinely human. Definitely worth reading all the author's notes at the end!

TheAromaofBooks I've read Elisabeth Elliot's books (Shadow of the Almighty and Through Gates of Splendor) about this mission. I'm not sure how I feel about someone creating a fictional account of it, but it sounds interesting! 4y

A compelling book that asks important questions about the true story of the missionaries in Ecuador, their motivations and the consequences of their actions. #bookclubreads
