True love. False friends. Scandalous gossip. Welcome back to Manhattan, 1899.As rumors fly about the untimely demise of New York's brightest star, Elizabeth Holland, all eyes are on those closest to the dearly departed: her sister, Diana, the family's only hope for redemption; Henry Schoonmaker, the flame Elizabeth never extinguished; Penelope Hayes, poised to claim all that her best friend left behind; even Elizabeth's former maid, Lina Broud, who discovers that while money matters and breeding counts, gossip is the new currency. In this delicious sequel to the New York Times bestselling The Luxe, nothing is more dangerous than a scandal . . . or more precious than a secret.

Better than the first book. I was in it with Elizabeth and Will and rooting for Diana and Henry, even though Diana deserves better. I had hopes for Lina to be a betterperson and for Penelope to end up under a train.

THAT ENDING. There are two more books in the series, so most characters will probably get the endings they deserve, but as Ned Stark learned in GoT, there are some wounds that can never heal.

Good writing/historical accuracy.

I liked this one less than the 1st in the series. But I still want to try the 3rd one.

"So this was betrayal. It was like being left alone in the desert at dusk without water or warmth. It left your mouth dry and will broken. It sapped your tears and made you hollow."
