I did have a hard time getting into this one because I didn't sympathize with Isabelle but about halfway through I was invested. Also the one play made me cry. I was not expecting that. (I go into it a little more on my blog.)

I love Alix Harrow's short stories so I was pretty excited to read her debut novel. I found the worlds and doors interesting. Also I teared up a little 😢 when we find out who the narrator is writing to. More details on my blog.

The Beautiful | Rene Ahdieh
Panpan

I'm more than willing to try Ahdieh's books because they have interesting concepts. The food descriptions and other culture stuff were fabulous but the romance was a big nope. And the twist at the end is surprising but I'm not sure it makes sense. I'm not going to reread to verify. More details on the blog.

A little overwhelmed... similar to my experience reading Angel Sanctuary by Kaori Yuki. Some things are revealed but I have even more questions now.

The Lady Rogue | Jenn Bennett
Pickpick

I'm used to reading Bennett's young adult contemporary romances but I really like them so I decided to give this historical supernatural whatnot a whirl. I enjoyed it a lot. The characters were fantastic, lots of fun knowledge tidbits about nefarious people, and the settings were well-constructed. The villain was scarier before the climax though.

This is not my favorite Tanith Lee book nor do I think it's her best. The prose is restrained comparatively but the characters and their interactions were interesting. Also there's discussion of themes Tanith Lee likes to explore especially in her retellings.

A Curse So Dark and Lonely | Brigid Kemmerer
Pickpick

I finished this last night and wasn't ready for it to be over (hoping there's a trilogy or duology in the works). I can't get over how complicated this was and how much I love Harper, Rhen, and Grey. I miss them already.

monogamist_reader The second book “A heart so fierce and broken“ will be out in January 2020 😀 5mo

I definitely want more from this author. This book was also fantastic. Full of food and hard decisions (and a trip to Spain). I'm a sucker for contemporaries with food.

At the beginning of the book we're presented with the beginning of Kora and Nova's story which takes place in a different world and before the events of the first book. Then we get to what's happening with Lazlo and Sarai.
The next time we got Kora and Nova's story I made the decision to just read those chapters for a little while until Nova's story started to merge with Lazlo and Sarai's.
It made me less impatient. 😊

Although it did remind me of Exit West because this was illustrating the contemporary situation in Baghdad with a supernatural twist.
