What would you do if an influenza pandemic arrived on your doorstep?... How would you find enough food when the supermarkets are empty?... How could you pay your bills when you lose your job because your workplace shuts down?... Will you be able to get medical attention when the hospitals are overflowing?... Would you and your family survive? The Pandemic Plan is a story about Estelle, the Director of a Public Health Unit. Estelle heads a team of health professionals that are the vanguard of managing outbreaks of viruses. A pandemic is something they train for and hope they will never face. But when an outbreak of the new, highly contagious influenza strain H15N8 reaches the shores of Australia in May, 2015, Estelle's team must work swiftly to try and contain it's spread. The community suffers, it's a cold winter, food and other essential services are in short supply. Hospitals are stretched beyond capabilities and people are dying in the thousands. The ugly side of humanity is seen but is also balanced by the noble care for others.Estelle's team must not only ensure their own safety, but control the panic of an unsuspecting public.

Vacation day 1: I get a message from my friend from work (must be read in Thor's voice) that Penguin Random House offices are closed till sometime in 2021. Don't worry, we are all working from home to keep making books, as we have been since March 13! I feel safer this way, especially since I am married to someone who has very bad lung issues.

BookishMe I saw this hashtag on Twitter #CancelEverythingNow 🙄😉😅 5y
LinesUponAPage @BookishMe a little extreme, right? Our state has 10 cases (2 of which are NBA basketball players) the Governor cancelled everything over 100 people. For years 50⬆️ only allowed in a group of 20. All churches cancelled. Kids still in school except 1 school district. Shelves at the stores are empty. People who really need TP can‘t get it. 🤦🏼‍♀️That doesn‘t make any sense. Especially water, we won‘t lose water going through pipes so ... 🤷🏼‍♀️. 5y
BookishMe When we were hit by the first wave, the needless panic was ridiculous. Now with the spike, due to gatherings here and in a neighbouring capital, we're trying to mostly stay calm. Shutdowns and cancelling gatherings are not enforced (yet) I also wonder if reactions are extreme. It's a flu virus - stay home and rest to recover should be adequate. Of cos, at risk age groups need more vigilance 5y
Scochrane26 Kentucky has pretty much shut down in the last day. I still have to work though, so I don‘t get to stay home & read. 5y
