Bitter Alpine
Bitter Alpine: An Emma Lord Mystery | Mary Daheim
2 posts | 2 read
New year, new murder . . . Emma Lord is on the case when death finds its way back to the wintry mountain town of Alpine. After a relatively calm and cozy holiday season, neither Emma Lord, editor and publisher of The Alpine Advocate, nor her husband, Sheriff Milo Dodge, are surprised when their new year gets off to a rocky start. A womans body has been found in a squalid motel. Her drivers license shows that Dawn Purvis was in her late thirties and lived in Weaverville, Californiaand the only connection between that town and Alpine is their gold-mining and logging origins. When they discover that Dawns room reservation was open-ended, Emma, Milo, and the ever-inquisitive Advocate receptionist, Alison Lindahl, are more than mildly curious. And never mind that the youthful Alison is a bit distracted by the new county extension agents virile good looks. She can still sleuth while she stalks her newest crush. But thats not all the news thats unfit to print. Theres something strange about the older couple who have moved into the cabin down the road that was once owned by a murder victim. The elderly wife seems anti-social. Theres got to be a reason, which Emma, Milo, and Alison intend to find outeven if it puts them in deadly danger.

I've been reading this series forever and following the characters of Alpine, it was nice to catch up with them again 😁 So much was going on in this book starting of course with a murder. vida is threatening to retire from her radio show, Adam is getting transferred from Alaska to Michigan, domestic abuse, snow storms, you know, the usual in Alpine 😅. The murder is solved but we are left hanging on a few other issues 😁 Nat galley arc, out 2-4.

I was....unimpressed with the latest entry to the series; it was fine, but dull. There wasn‘t really any “action”, just a series of events narrated to us and I found myself constantly wondering when something would happen. By chapter 16, I had given up a. Just powered through to finish the book.
