The Moth Diaries
The Moth Diaries | Rachel Klein
8 posts | 8 read | 10 to read
At an exclusive girls' boarding school, a sixteen-year-old girl records her most intimate thoughts in a diary. The object of her obsession is her room-mate, Lucy Blake, and Lucy's friendship with their new and disturbing classmate. Ernessa is a mysterious presence with pale skin and hypnotic eyes. Around her swirl dark secrets and a series of ominous disasters. As fear spreads through the school, fantasy and reality mingle into a waking nightmare of gothic menace, fuelled by the lusts and fears of adolescence. And at the centre of the diary is the question that haunts all who read it: Is Ernessa really a vampire? Or is the narrator trapped in her own fevered imagination?

Pickpick

I'm giving this a pick, but only just. I know it's supposed to be creepy, but I didn't find it creepy, so much as sad. It could just be that I've read to much Gillian Flynn, but the narrator was so openly unreliable that I didn't trust her perspective enough to suspend disbelief in her interpretation of events. That said, it held me to the end and was worth the read. Not what I'd hoped but still quite good.

This book is getting pretty dark and twisted. The narrator's voice is so cynical and broody and yet I'm not getting the Wuthering Heights I must put this down immediately feeling.

A new book, chai tea, and the You've Got Mail Soundtrack. I can think of no better way to spend a spare hour.

Mehso-so

I give this a so-so. It was good, but not as creepy or atmospheric as I was looking for. Very character driven, but not much plot wise.

Pickpick

I originally read this when I was 13 and rereading it was a real eyeopener for how little I understood at the time. Anyway, this is a fantastic read - definitely not your typical vampire story but so wonderfully creepy that I needed to cuddle Fat Pony to get me through it!

LauraBrook Yay, Fat Pony! 💛 8y
