Mehso-so

This book is part of my 9yo's homeschool curriculum and not something I would ordinarily have picked up. It's a nice story, set in Appalachia during the Great Depression. Ellie and her family struggle to survive far from their home & community, forming both fragile friendships of necessity, and deeper relationships with the families that chose to live on Echo Mtn generations ago. Ellie is a great protagonist with real depth and beautiful growth.

I bought this as a gift for my nephew, and am glad I did, but also sad to let it go. This story was so much more than I thought it would be. I loved everything about this.

Pickpick

This book took my by surprise. The writing evocatively captured my imagination with the beauty of the mountains while effectively contrasting the hardships of mountain life amidst the Great Depression. The characters where complex and lovely, and while the story was almost woeful at times the lyrical prose left me with a sense of hopefulness. Don‘t be fooled by by the middle grade label, this was pure story telling at its best. A wonderful read
