If, like me, this year has you scrutinizing your city council, Of Bears and Ballots is a pleasant way to learn a little more about city council. Heather Lende is known for her books about the quaint Alaskan town she lives in, but when she runs for office in 2016 and wins, the next 3 years are eye-opening, heart-wrenching, and enlightening. It didn‘t always make for the most riveting read, but I value Lende‘s first-hand, hard-won experience here.

Lcsmcat Sounds interesting. Since I work in local government I should read this. 😀 4y

Lende, known for her anecdotal tales of living in Haines, Alaska, writes in her latest memoir about her adventures in local government. I appreciated hearing her struggles with finding the right balance between her convictions and what would ultimately best help her community. But, there were parts of this that fell flat for me; I liked the humor sprinkled throughout, but she digressed a lot. Her nature descriptions of Haines sound amazing!

This a pretty superficial memoir about the first year as an elected official. It was just OK.
