Savage
Savage | Jacques Jouet, Amber Shields
1 post | 1 read
Based on the life of Post-Impressionist painter Paul Gauguin, Jacques Jouet's "Savage" compels the reader to ask whether it is the primitive or the civilized man who is savage. At the height of the Belle ?poque, an eccentric young clothing designer searches for inspiration and identity as an artist among the "savage" peoples of France's colonies. Influenced by several exotic lovers, a quirky "vieille" dame, and ?douard Manet himself, Paul's increasingly unconventional designs parallel his increasingly unbalanced state of mind as he struggles to find a market for his work among the haute bourgeoisie. The failure of this venture, coupled with psychosis due to an untreated illness, ultimately leads to his demise.

Mehso-so

Eh. I didn't care for the narrator addressing me directly, nor did I know what was happening a lot of the time. It's short, and a fairly quick read, though. Maybe if I knew more about Gauguin? Maybe if it weren't stream-of-consciousness? Dunno.
Book 7 of the #pantslessreadathon. Had to come in my bedroom and lay down for awhile. And had to wear pants all day - the whole front of my house is practically windows, don't want to scare neighbors!

Dogearedcopy LOL, Neighbor caught me playing air guitar and singing Aerosmith at the top of my lungs! Middle of the day and I forgot DH had hired him as our lawn guy! Every once in awhile now, the neighbor brings his radio and plays the Classic Rock station. And yes, he cranks it up for Aerosmith 😬 7y
LauraBrook @BestOfFates They're all shorties, it looks better than it maybe should. 😜 @Dogearedcopy 😂😂😂 nothing wrong with cranked up Aerosmith! 7y
