We Were Liars meets Riverdale with a supernatural twist in this timely #metoo thriller about mean girls, murder, and race in a quiet Midwestern suburb. Violet Choudhury may be part of the popular clique at school, but as one of a handful of brown girls in a small Illinois town, all she really wants to do is blend in and disappear. Unfortunately for her, shes got a knack for seeing spirits, including the deadsomething shes tried to ignore all her life. But when the queen bee of Violets cheerleading squad ends up dead following a sex tape thats not as consensual as everyone wants to believe, Violet's friends from the spirit world decide its the perfect time for Violet to test her skills and finally accept the legacy of spiritual fighters from whom shes descended. Her mission? Find the killer. Or else shes next.

Bailedbailed

I really wanted to like this, but halfway through it‘s just annoying. Life‘s too short - onto the next book.

An interesting take on the high school mean girls trope. I was curious enough to keep going and got all the way through this as an audiobook. The characters were okay, but I like the messages of learning to be yourself and the cultural tie-ins. I would have liked more discussion on bullying and bystanders as that came up a lot and the MC did nothing, but 🤷‍♀️

Triggers: Rape, language, semi-graphic murder, cyber-bullying, underage drinking

This is my second 1-star review this week (in the first 3 days of the month!). Why? I usually bail on books that are so awful; but this week, I gave them the benefit of the doubt that they would redeem themselves. They didn't. It's time to trust my gut again.

BGG is a hot mess. It doesn't know what it wants to be, and it ends up being crappy at all the things.

[Trigger warning: rape.]
