Hell and Other Destinations: A 21st-Century Memoir | Madeleine Albright
8 posts | 8 read | 10 to read
Six-time New York Times bestselling author and former Secretary of State Madeleine Albrightone of the worlds most admired and tireless public servantsreflects on the final stages of ones career, and working productively into your later decades in this revealing, funny, and inspiring memoir. In 2001, when Madeleine Albright was leaving office as Americas first female secretary of state, interviewers asked her how she wished to be remembered. I dont want to be remembered, she answered. I am still here and have much more I intend to do. As difficult as it might seem, I want every stage of my life to be more exciting than the last. In that time of transition, the former Secretary considered the possibilities: she could write, teach, travel, give speeches, start a business, fight for democracy, help to empower women, campaign for favored political candidates, spend more time with her grandchildren. Instead of choosing one or two, she decided to do it all. For nearly twenty years, Albright has been in constant motion, navigating half a dozen professions, clashing with presidents and prime ministers, learning every day. Since leaving the State Department, she has blazed her own trailand given voice to millions who yearn for respect, regardless of gender, background, or age. Hell and Other Destinations reveals this remarkable figure at her bluntest, funniest, most intimate, and most serious. It is the tale of our times anchored in lessons for all time, narrated by an extraordinary woman with a matchless zest for life.

It took me a long time to read this one, no fault of Albright‘s though. This book is split into often individual stories per chapter and was easy to read as a chapter here and there in between other things. Some stories seem dated now, 2016 election seems like eons ago, other seem more prescient, especially those about NATO, China, Russia. But as a whole the chapters where she discusses her personal life, personal victories, her drive and ⤵️

Riveted_Reader_Melissa ↪️ things she needed to be talked into, and things she needed to talk others into, people she admired, and even the little side comments her grandchild made were the most touching for me. It‘s great to see the human side of our political figures and especially strong women with real lives too. 14mo

WTF! How have I never heard of this and how didn‘t it become a scandal!

OMG, just when you think you‘ve heard everything, something like just jumps off the page at you…mentioned like an oh well normal occurrence that just flabbergasts and enrages me. 🤦‍♀️

The school for the brightest of the bright young women, who were photographed topless, graded on their bodies, and then the pictures were shipped off to Yale. 🤮

Suet624 Unreal. Infuriating. 2y

Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Suet624 @BarbaraJean @UwannaPublishme @IndoorDame there‘s more to this strange story…. https://www.nytimes.com/1995/01/15/magazine/the-great-ivy-league-nude-posture-ph... Apparently it was out of a eugenics scientific posture shows qualities of success thing 😬 (edited) 2y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ivy_League_nude_posture_photos “However, starting in 2020, hundreds of photos of male freshman from Yale have gone up for sale individually on eBay, insuring that many remain in private collections”. 😵‍💫 so wrong that this happened and the the pictures just ended up wherever 2y
IndoorDame Wow! Those articles are mind blowing and so upsetting! I‘m also shocked I‘ve never heard anything about this before 2y

I enjoyed this memoir about Albright‘s career after being Secretary of State. I didn‘t/don‘t know a lot about her, but she seemed very funny and smart. I‘d like to read more of her books.

It took me a full 2 weeks to finish this book, but I did and I'm glad I picked it up. I learned so much about Madeleine Albright! I definitely want to read more about her pin collection too.

This woman is a legend and I love her. Really enjoyed this memoir of her more recent years, which I think could inspire women of any age but might be extra pleasing to the not-so-young among us - the array of important work she‘s done in her sixties, seventies, and eighties is remarkable. I‘ve only read her 2018 book Fascism (also great), but her backlist is on my TBR now. Audio recommended, as her intelligence and sense of humor shine through.

How did I not know Madeleine Albright has a new memoir coming out? And that title! 🎤 drop

Her Fascism book was so good (I‘ll tag it below if you are interested), I‘m going to have to pick this one up on audiobook soon.

Christine I didn‘t know this one was coming either and jumped on the hold list immediately yesterday! Fascism was a remarkable book. ❤️ 4y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Christine Yes it was! I just happened to see this in a book store email flyer today, and did the same...although I might have to splurge an audible credit for this one. I really liked her narration of Fascism, and my library doesn‘t have the audiobook available. 4y
Christine Yes!! I mean, I‘m sure the print is great too, but I agree, absolutely love her narration. 4y
