But it turned out that my mother was right about the bug. She was several days too early, and mine had not been crawling, but there would end up being a bug in me after all, just a few days after she checked into the hospital, my fated bug, a butterfly Id found at the babysitters apartment, floating like a red and gold leaf so prettily on the top of a tall glass of water. On the night her mother is taken to a mental hospital after a psychotic episode, eight year-old Francie is staying with her babysitter. Next to the couch on which shes sleeping, there is a lamp that catches her eye, its shade adorned with butterflies. When she wakes, Francie sees a dead butterfly floating in a glass of water. She drinks it before the babysitter can see. Twenty years later, Francie is compelled to make sense of that moment, and two other incidents her discovery of a desiccated beetle from a school paper, and a bouquet of dried roses from some curtains. Her recall is exact: she is sure these things were real. But despite her certainty, she wrestles with the hold these memories have over her, and with what they say about her place in the world. Told in lush, lilting prose, The Butterfly Lampshade is a heartfelt and heartbreaking examination of the sometimes overwhelming power of the material world, and of a broken love between mother and child.

SO SAD this is over!!!! This book tore me to shreds and put me back together again! We follow 8 year old Francie through her tumultuous upbringing with her mentally ill mother to her life with her aunt and uncle. As an adult, Francie tries to reconcile a number of odd occurrences that took place at emotionally difficult times. I finished this in about 24 hours and I can't remember the last time that happened!

I've gotten over the yarn craft blunder and fell head over heels with these broken, traumatized characters. Bender meticulously explores how children deal with the trauma of a parent with mental illness in a way that is so tender, it hurts.

I have been eyeing the beautiful Juniper books for several years, but they are not inexpensive and every time I like the cover scheme the books were not really to my liking or vice versa. So when they started this new line of contemporary “books everyone should own” (BESO) I took the plunge, or kiss if you will. I am really enjoying the first installment that arrived on Christmas Eve. The personalized Yeti for my tea was my favorite gift this year

I can‘t believe this is Bender‘s first novel in 10 years. Her last book The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake is a book that I still think about. Lucky for us, I don‘t think you will be disappointed by her new book.
