Catherine House: A Novel | Elisabeth Thomas
post image
Mehso-so

Catherine House started out as a strong novel for me, but I felt the plot was lost a little bit. Maybe I would feel differently had I not listened to the #audiobook of this. I didn't hate it, it just wasn't the best type of novel to listen to. Maybe I'll try it again at a later time, but get a hard copy. Despite what I felt was lacking, it was a #creepy, dark read. Not up to par with #silviaMorenaGarcia writing, but similar vibes. #campusnovel

I'm really not sure about this book. I haven't been able to get into it and find myself wanting to listen to other other books or podcasts when I play it. Not really sure what it is about this one that I'm not connecting with. I've been listening to it for about 3 weeks - usually not a promising sign that I'll finish the thing. The plot seems iffy and drags on quite a bit. Anyone else feel the same way?

I'm almost halfway through this monster of a novel. I was able to find an audio version on YouTube, luckily. Decent book full of #drama and #scandal, which fueled my run, cleaning day, and Christmas decorating yesterday. Hoping today will be the same. Definitely don't want to lose momentum and end up DNFing this one.

Why have I not read this book sooner?! Do you ever make eye contact with a book on a shelf and just have the feeling that you need to read it? Over and over I would spy the spine of this book while I'm at work, always wanting or feeling the pull to pick it up. I decided to bring it home with me during our Fall Break and IT WAS WORTH IT. I really loved the creepy atmosphere. Perfect for an October read.

This audiobook is great. I love this series so much, such a fun and cozy read. Although the audiobook was wonderful to listen to, I kinda wish I bought hard copies of the series. Would be perfect to sit down with a blanket and a cup of hot tea. If you're looking for something easy with a fun twist then pick this one up.

The cicadas are so loud, but it feels like a fall morning. I really hope that we're on our way to cooler weather. It's been rough not being able to sit out and read in the mornings due to the high humidity; today was a nice change. School and XC season has started back and I'm already stressed. Love the students but being around people wears me out and I haven't had the energy to read.

One more awkward quote from my previous post:

"I felt the little love plant inside me stretch, swell, and unfurl its leaves, like he was pouring Love Potion #9 over the thing."

While the plot was strong for most of the book, I lost interest around page 280. Weird, inner dialogue just gets to me and this book was FULL of it. I'm not sure I'll continue with the series.

Sometimes I struggle with teen books...the dialogue is too wordy and awkward, definitely things that teenagers wouldn't say or think. Reference examples below:

1) "I was as fragile as a new born."

2)"Mae West, a famous Vaudeville actress, once said, 'A man's kiss is his signature.' I grinned to myself. If that was true, then Ren's signature was the John Hancock of kisses."

Here lately, I've been reading books that have similar themes by accident. I wish I did more paired or flight reads but I don't always put a ton of thought behind my reading strategy. All I know is that I'm marking off books that have been on my TBR shelf for an extensive time.
"Tiger's Curse" has been fun to read so far, not sure I'll continue with the rest of the series.

"Cursed" has been fine as well. We'll see how it ends.

I really don't even know how to feel about this book. This was my follow-up choice right after reading Verity, maybe that was the mistake. Verity was so crazy, unpredictable, and twisted that I was expecting that again. We Were Never Here was a little too predictable for me and the story line drug a bit for me. The characters were incredibly unlikable and a little annoying.

It wasn't awful, just not what I wanted/needed.

What did I just read?? I really don't want to give anything away, but if you like suspenseful thrillers with fantastic twists this book is for you. This was the first book I've read by Hoover and it blew me away. From the very first page I was hooked and couldn't stop reading. I had a major hangover from this book because I was still questioning the ending - going back and forth on what really happened.

It is very rare that I leave a book unfinished, even if it takes me a month or year to complete. This is the second book this year that I'm pretty sure will be a DNF.

2 hours in and I feel like I'm getting nowhere. There are mixed reviews about this one on Goodreads/Amazon. Some say it's a waste of time, while others say it's brilliant. Maybe I'm missing something but fear I am not. Has anyone else read this??

marleed I was not a fan of part 1 at all but stuck with it because that‘s just kind of what I do. But the change of perspective in part 2 is fascinating. It even convinced me to turn back and reread the pages I‘d initially forced my way through. 6mo

Finally at the end of the trilogy, even though I've seen where there's a 4th book possibly? Not too sure I'll take the time to read that one. I feel like this plot was a little drawn out and could've, should've only had 2 books in the series. The writing is sooo redundant and the author seems to be writing for a small child the way that she goes into minute detail about things.
