This is a pick because I can't recall reading a book in which nearly ALL the characters are so despicable in their own way that you want to see them thru to hell. The author was successful in creating a lasting impression. In the afterward, she writes feeling sorry for Tom, I don't see anything in him to be sorry for - he's portrayed as lazy and foolish. I trust she's done the research and her story is as accurate as a fictional account allows.
