Giving #BookSpin another go. I love the idea of using two lists; one for bookspin and the other for #bookspinbingo! This is the bookspin list. This month is basically entirely dedicated to reading for my committee, but once we meet I‘ll try to fit this month‘s pick in.

TheAromaofBooks Woohoo!!! And I am way into the dual-list method!! 😂 2y

This was one of my favorite MG books this year. Main character Silas starts coming out to those around him. He is simultaneously excited and anxious. Silas draws inspiration from Glenn Burke, inventor of the high five and first openly gay professional baseball player. Scenes between Silas and the caring adults in his life brought me to tears more than once. I loved the references to The Sandlot. (👇)

MandaMT There are many descriptive scenes on the baseball field. I‘m not sporty, so I was often confused. This was a blessing. I discovered reading sports books is a great way to connect with my students. They are much savvier than I am, and completely understand the passages I do not. It‘s a great opportunity to flip the script on our comprehension conversations. They watch me, in earnest, using the strategies we talk about to figure out what‘s going on. (edited) 3y
MandaMT It helps us shake the idea that reading is either something you‘re good or bad at. It highlights the importance background knowledge, content specific vocabulary, and personal interest. 3y
