I love a good circus read, it will get me every time. I also like WWII historical fiction, so this book was a perfect fit. Good historical content with some wonderful details. The writing was flowing & engaging with great detail in terms of setting and action. I would've liked more fleshing out of the interpersonal relationships. Those seemed to somewhat scratch the surface & I wanted more. A good read with a bit of a surprising ending.
WWII & the Circus are 2 of my favorite things to read about. The Ringmaster's Daughter perfectly combines them in a melancholic story of love & friendship in the face of war. Set in France right at the beginning of the German occupation, we meet Michel a young Parisian man seeking to find his place in this new time of uncertainty. With some luck & help from a generous friend he escapes the city by stowing away on a circus train & his story begins.
I did enjoy reading this book but many times throughout this book, I found not much was happening in the story or their just wasn‘t enough character development.
Unfortunately, this book failed to have me in its grip most of the time and I didn‘t care much for the characters. 🙈 I didn‘t find myself eager to pick it up and continue it. So I was in a funny kind of limbo, where I did and also did not enjoy this book.
Im sure plenty will 💜 it.
