The Ringmaster's Daughter: A beautiful and heartbreaking World War 2 love story | Carly Schabowski
5 posts | 4 read | 7 to read
Circus people don't ask who you were before, or what god you believe in… when you join the circus, you are family, whatever your past. Paris, 1940. Twenty-year-old Michel Bonnet lives on the edge of the law, finding work where he can breaking in horses on the outskirts of the city. But when the Nazis invade, Michel takes refuge as a stowaway on a rickety train bound for the rural south. It’s a journey that will change his life forever. The train is property of Le Cirque Neumann – a travelling circus owned by the troubled and irritable showman Werner Neumann. Neumann offers Michel a job caring for the company’s horses – a lucky break, but with an unusual condition attached. Michel must keep to himself and never speak of what he sees behind the glittering curtain of the big top. But as Michel finds himself pulled into the strange and wondrous world of the great spectacular it becomes more difficult to keep his promise. Why does the man with the performing monkey never speak, and the sword swallower turn his face away? Who are the silent, shadowy figures who flit like moths between the wagons when the sun is down? It’s clear that Neumann is keeping his performers hidden away… but why? And how can Michel win the love of the beautiful and exotic trapeze artist Freida – the graceful, green-eyed star of Neuman’s spectacular – when he’s been forbidden to even meet her gaze? An emotional and uplifting wartime novel – perfect for fans of Water for Elephants, The Nightingale and The Tattooist of Auschwitz.

I love a good circus read, it will get me every time. I also like WWII historical fiction, so this book was a perfect fit. Good historical content with some wonderful details. The writing was flowing & engaging with great detail in terms of setting and action. I would've liked more fleshing out of the interpersonal relationships. Those seemed to somewhat scratch the surface & I wanted more. A good read with a bit of a surprising ending.

WWII & the Circus are 2 of my favorite things to read about. The Ringmaster's Daughter perfectly combines them in a melancholic story of love & friendship in the face of war. Set in France right at the beginning of the German occupation, we meet Michel a young Parisian man seeking to find his place in this new time of uncertainty. With some luck & help from a generous friend he escapes the city by stowing away on a circus train & his story begins.

I did enjoy reading this book but many times throughout this book, I found not much was happening in the story or their just wasn‘t enough character development.
Unfortunately, this book failed to have me in its grip most of the time and I didn‘t care much for the characters. 🙈 I didn‘t find myself eager to pick it up and continue it. So I was in a funny kind of limbo, where I did and also did not enjoy this book.
Im sure plenty will 💜 it.
