Some young boys on a soccer team in Thailand were stranded in a cave in 2018 while exploring with their coach. The country and people from across the world came together to save them. Obviously, the rescue was incredible and it‘s a wonderful true story, but the book is written in a way that made it drag even though it was short.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Loved this on audio! The harrowing story of the rescue of 12 boys and their soccer coach from a cave in Thailand. Also learned quite a bit about Thai culture and cave diving and exploration. Highly recommend.

A story which fascinated (and terrified) the world turned into a short narrative non-fiction book. The girls and I enjoyed listening to this, although having two lockdowns in the past month, it took us a bit longer than expected as we mostly listen in the car. I expect it would have been even more gripping if we had been listening more regularly. Still, both were intrigued and very relieved when the boys survived.

Wow. I am so grateful to the Newbery committee for picking this as an Honor book this year, because I would never have picked it up otherwise. This is one of those stories where truth is more incredible than fiction. Everyone needs to know about this rescue! Read this book!

BucklingBookshelves I agree with all of this! What an amazing true story. And I‘d NEVER have picked it up if not a Newbery. I think middle grade non/fiction is a genre I haven‘t given a fair chance. SO curious to see an example of the author‘s fiction since her A Wish in the Dark was also honored this year. 2 Newberys in one year for the same author is definitely a rarity! I‘ll have to look up if it‘s ever happened before. 🤔 4y

I could weep 😭 They finally have been found, yet we know the rescue is far from over. The offer of help from a 14-year old boy who is literally trapped & starving. 😭

BucklingBookshelves @smilingshelves highly unusual for me, but I seem to be a bit on a runaway train on this one! 😬 Even though I know the gist of the story, I‘m finding it both terrifying and riveting. Definitely a page-turner and so well-written. This wasn‘t on my radar at all, but it may end up being a bit of a sleeper hit! 4y

And take this with a grain of salt because I‘m not the fastest reader, especially with little ones around... but I don‘t think I‘m going to be able pace this one out. smilingshelves @Mitch I totally agree! I honestly didn't follow this news story while it was happening because I just couldn't think about those kids trapped in a cave. But this book is a Newbery Honor book this year, so I've got to read it. I think it'll help to know the happy ending in advance! 4y
