4 posts | 3 read
Illus. in full color with black-and-white photos. "Covers not only the story of Robinson's prowess and his problems as the first black man to play in the major leagues, but also the story of the rise and fall of black baseball and some of its star players and managers. Nicely geared by vocabulary, sentence length, and print size to the primary grades audience."--Bulletin, Center for Children's Books.

“And he's just become the first black man to play major-league baseball in the twentieth century.“

I would use this book in a classroom as an option for students to write history reports on. Very informational read!

This is a great and easy read book for younger and older children. It's very informative and has a lot of good facts about Jackie Robinson's journey through the baseball league. This would be great for any child who loves baseball!

I chose this for #bbrc #er #blackmaincharacterpublishedbefore2000. It was hard to find an ER to fit this, as my library is really on top of weeding and replacing children‘s books as they age. This was 1st published in 1989, but had been reprinted. It needs a new update, but the info is good. The sentence structure & vocab used is great for new readers trying to become stronger readers. Inspiring story.

TheKidUpstairs That one is a tough prompt for me too! 4y
LibrarianRyan Yeah. You kind of grabbed on to why I chose it. Black main characters in Easy Readers were few and far between except of the Little Bill Books, which most libraries weeded after the trial. 4y
Sarahreadstoomuch @TheKidUpstairs it is for multiple reasons: there wasn‘t as much published then as now, and kids books don‘t hold up over time. But it can be done! May take a little digging and checking copyright dates, but that‘s why it‘s a challenge, right? 4y

Sarahreadstoomuch @LibrarianRyan oh, yeah. Definitely. And if you think about it- the kids looking to see themselves in books 20 years ago are now parents or at least parent-aged and are helping drive publishing to print more books with inclusive and diverse representation 4y

Sarahreadstoomuch @Susanita wow! Thank you for telling me! This book gave the year, but. Or the day. 4y
