Death by the Dozen | Jenn McKinlay

Mehso-so

I think I‘m staying for the series just for the cupcakes! Mel and Angie are in a baking competition, and so is their horrible competitor Olivia. A judge, Mel‘s friend and mentor, is found dead at the competition, and Mel feels she must find out how they died and why. The reveal at the end was well crafted. And a kitten is introduced in the series, so that made me happy! 😂

Mel‘s wishy-washy feelings made me eye roll!

Pickpick

I am terrible at listening to nonfiction—I rarely pick up the audio version. But, I‘ve wanted to read this one, and it is not readily available at the library but was available through my Audible membership.

While I got bogged down with so many dates & people, I think that‘s more to do with my issue as a listener rather than the book. Loxton writes of the London satirists in the 18th century, a topic not really covered in general histories. ⬇️

Librarybelle ⬆️ I learned about about the starring individuals and the role their work played in the UK government and world events. Good book! 2mo
bookandbedandtea I love her Instagram account! Her upcoming book, Eighteen, sounds good to me but maybe I'll give this one a go too. 2mo
Librarybelle @bookandbedandtea I love her IG account too! I‘m interested in reading Eighteen! 2mo
LibrarianRyan @Librarybelle this looks awesome. I agree it takes me so long to listen to non fiction. But I listen to it faster then I read it! 2mo

When I found a #picturebook by Keith Richards in the library database, I knew I had to get it! This is for kids in elementary school and details Richards‘ time with his grandfather and Richards‘ first guitar. I probably love this one more for the fact that this is by Richards (I loved his memoir Life…you should read it!), but the story itself has wisps of nostalgia to it. I really liked it. #BBRC #LetterG

Naked!: with audio recording | Michael Ian Black

I‘m sure there are some that will find this hysterical. For me, it‘s okay. I‘m not the biggest fan of Black‘s comedy, so I‘m not the right reader for this. I can see kids adoring it, however. #BBRC #PictureBook #LetterN

LibrarianRyan It amazes me he is more known for his various kids books lately then for his comedy. I didn‘t like his comedy either. 2mo

I finally put together my July 2024 stats! This does not include the picture books for #BBRC , but I still managed to complete 17 books last month. I‘m shocked, but some are buddy read titles that finished up last month.

Favorite reads in July:

Grief is for People by Sloane Crosley
Lula Dean‘s Little Library of Banned Books by Kirsten Miller
River Sing Me Home by Eleanor Shearer

First, the data in the database does not match up with the first in the series…

Moore writes based on her childhood, growing up with freckles and red hair. The narrative discusses appearance and being oneself, with a bit of humor. Fun read. #PictureBook #BBRC #LetterF

LibrarianRyan I liked this when it first came out. It‘s not the best but so much better than the other celebrity picture books. 2mo

This was adorable! I liked the use of the “they” pronoun, so it‘s a new intro for kids on pronoun use. Beyond that, this is a great book of reaching one‘s goals and the support of family and friends and being oneself. #PictureBook #LetterP #BBRC

LibrarianRyan I liked this but wish it was better. 2mo

Just Because | Matthew McConaughey

Panpan

Sadly, I was not a fan of this book. While the idea is good—looking at possibilities and contradictions in a healthy way—I got so bogged down with the repetitious “just because…it doesn‘t mean.” The writing also contains slang phrases, so it‘s a definite in the moment publication.

The illustrations are nice, but I‘m not sure they always matched up with the words. Sorry, McConaughey fans, this one is not for me. #PictureBook #LetterJ #BBRC

The actor Max Greenfield writes a book about not wanting to read a book. Though considered a #PictureBook , there are less illustrations but more word graphic designs. I can see the concept appealing to kids looking for a laugh or who can relate to a lack of interest in reading a book. Just meh for me. #BBRC #LetterI

Di Franco writes a narrative that is empowering for kids with the message that everyone is different but everyone knows how connected we are. I loved the illustrations! #PictureBook #BBRC #LetterK
