The Beauty of the Death Cap
The Beauty of the Death Cap | Catherine Dousteyssier-Khoze
4 posts | 1 read | 7 to read
Nikonor is an eccentric and scholarly snob, a mycomaniac who has just made it to the Chteau de la Charlanne where he spent his childhood in the company of his twin sister, Anastasie. After all these years, it is not quite clear what brings him back to la Charlanne--an isolated and somewhat derelict castle located in the heart of the French countryside--but he is keen to share various memories with the reader in order to 'set the record straight', while he delivers his opinions on literature, cheeses, and, especially, mushrooms. Winner of both a Prix Andr Dubreuil and a Prix Fondation Prince Pierre de Monaco upon its original publication in France, The Beauty of the Death Cap is a darkly comic and sinister novel, a work that, page by page, becomes ever more disturbing, as we try to discover who Nikonor really is.

I was in exactly the right mood for dark, twisted humour in the voice of a fussy, delusional mushroom fanatic in the Auvergne region of France. Nikonor is tight lipped around people, but in his journal he eventually reveals all. The tale is delightfully outrageous and macabre. Translation from French by Tina Kover. #womenintranslationmonth

Centique Man, fussy delusional mushroom fanatic sounds wonderful! 4y

I must absolutely be in full possession of my faculties—that is one of the reasons why I eat so many Portuguese sardines (sardines are excellent for mental acuteness, you know).

Centique Funnily enough, when my brain was turning loops during peri-menopause my doctor “prescribed” oily fish like sardines. I had heard they were good for your brain, nice to have it corroborated! 4y

(I confess a weakness for the fly-catchers of the Russian illustrator Ivan Yakovlevich Bilibin [1876-1942] who never failed to include a multitude of little white-dotted red caps in his otherwise dense, dark and frightening forests)

I was 3 and a half years old. Already highly advanced for my age, I understood even the finer points of mushroom-hunting perfectly, thanks to an illustrated book (Le Petit Mycologue, 1923 edition) presented to me by my father for my second birthday.

(Image is of a mushroom guide for kids that I read a few years ago)
