The shadow of the cursed Dragon Lord has hung over the town of Lirinsholme for centuries, and no one ever knows when the Dragon will claim his next doomed Bride. Rhianne Menyon has dreams of being a painter, but her world changes forever when a single moment of sacrifice brings her to Black's Keep as the Dragon's latest Bride. As she attempts to adjust to her new life...and to know something of the monster who is now her husband...Rhianne begins to see that the curse is far crueler than she first believed, and unraveling the mystery of what happened to the Dragon's Brides is only the beginning. A retelling of Beauty and the Beast, set in the world of the Latter Kingdoms. Authors Note: While this is the second book in this series, all Tales of the Latter Kingdoms novels are written as standalone romances and can be read in any order.

It‘s frickin cold, so I figured I‘d have some hot sake with DRAGON ROSE (which I love, even though I‘m reading it so dammed slow).

3/4 of a carafe in, I was all, “Look at me! I‘ve trained myself up to a strong alcohol tolerance! All the flavour; none of the drunkenness.”

7/8 of a carafe in, the sake was like, “HELLO, YOU LIGHTWEIGHT.”

Sake, man. You just can‘t trust it.

This is one of those go-to-bed-early-and-read-lots Sundays.

I‘m two chapters into DRAGON ROSE, and it‘s off to a good start. The opening is very like UPROOTED by Naomi Novik, but this book predates that one by a few years. Y‘all know how it is with fairy tale retellings; there‘re only so many ways you can set them up before they stop being retellings and start being original stories that vaguely echo earlier sources.

Pickpick

A good but not great retelling of Beauty and the Beast. I enjoyed it enough that I'll look for some other books by the author.
