Echoes of Family | Barbara Claypole White
12 posts | 5 read | 4 to read
Sometimes the only way through darkness is to return to where it began.Marianne Stokes fled England at seventeen, spiraling into the manic depression that would become her shadow. She left behind secrets, memories, and tragedy: one teen dead, and her first love, Gabriel, badly injured. Three decades later she s finally found peace in the North Carolina recording studio she runs with her husband, Darius, and her almost-daughter, Jade until another fatality propels her back across the ocean to confront the long-buried past.In her picturesque childhood village, the first person she meets is the last person she wants to see again: Gabriel. Now the village vicar, he takes her in without question, and ripples of "what if" reverberate through both their hearts. As Marianne s mind unravels, Jade and Darius track her down. Tempers clash when everyone tries to help, but only by finding the courage to face her illness can Marianne heal herself and her offbeat family."

Pickpick

Went to a book reading and fell in love with this book again a bit more after all the discussion. Love BCW - she is my favorite NC author ❤️📚🎉
(Poor chair placement?)

BkClubCare I failed, though. I was supposed to bring pie. 😕 8y

Mental Health is rarely talked about. Barbara does such a wonderful job telling the tale of a bipolar woman and makes the characters ones you like and understand.

My newest favorite indie bookstore was recently featured (w/ other wonderful shops) in a national article abt what makes a wonderful indie: Scuppernong Books in Greensboro NC. I am looking forward to seeing Barbara Claypole White promote her latest at this store in October.
This photo was taken after the infamous NC bathroom bill controversy erupted. I couldn't find the one of a sign that featured quote by Margaret Atwood. #GetIndie

SaraFair A sign like that would really solve some things! Will check this place out next time I am in Greensboro... 8y

"... assorted mini tarts that belonged, surely, in the window of a Parisian patisserie." Tarts count as pie in my book.

xicanti Tarts are like pie cupcakes. Cup pies. 8y

Mehso-so

This is another one that seems to have rave reviews on Goodreads but was just so-so for me. 🌟🌟🌟3 Stars. Thank you to Netgalley and Lake Union Publishing for an advance copy of this in exchange for an honest review.

Laura317 @KrisConstantReader I'm curious. Have you ever bailed on a net galley read? How did you handle it? 8y
Penny_LiteraryHoarders I did bail on one for sure, (it was fairly recent) but probably more... I just wrote in the little feedback section that it wasn't for me and I wasn't going to continue reading. I was polite but wasn't going to finish it or spend time writing/saying anything more about it. 🙂 8y

KrisConstantReader @Laura317 yes, I did exactly what @Penny_LiteraryHoarders did--I explained why it wasn't for me (it wasn't billed as a ya book but it was, plus it was second in a series) and I sent the feedback anyway. 8y
KrisConstantReader @Laura317 I've also started a review with, "This is easily one of the worst books I have ever read." I kinda felt bad but you do need to be honest. 8y
KrisConstantReader @Laura317 here's the same review I sent to Netgalley when I bailed: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/1691883266 8y
