Ghosts of the Pacific | Philip Roy
Sailing out of the icy Arctic into the balmy South Pacific, Alfred and his dog and seagull crew encounter fishermen on a shrimp trawler who will kill anything in their way -- turtles, dolphins, sharks, even people -- in their desperation to make fast money. It is a narrow escape for the submariners. They also discover that the vast Pacific Ocean contains sunken warships, aeroplanes, radioactive debris and millions of tons of plastic garbage, all of which appear to confirm a dire prediction given to Alfred by an Inuit elder: "The sea is dying". Yet Alfred is encouraged when he meets the crew of an environmental protection ship, and then, a floating circus. He learns that the Pacific is a weird and wondrous place. But there is a war being waged between those who want to protect the oceans and those who don't care. He must take a stand.
