Memoirs of a Beatnik is an account of a young artist coming of age sensually and intellectually. The book grew out of the author's own experience as a bold and independent woman who dropped out of college at the age of 18 in order to write.

vivastory I saw her at St Mark's Poetry Project in 2000. I was visiting my aunt in Rhode Island & I noticed that she was going to be giving a reading the day my return flight was scheduled. I rescheduled for a few days later, took a bus from Providence to NY for my first trip to NY. In less than 24 hrs I went to Strand, MoMa, St Mark's Poetry Project & Bookstore. Pure magic. Will never forget it. 4y
Leftcoastzen @vivastory that sounds like a perfect New York experience! 4y
vivastory It really was incredible. I haven't read her in years, but I remember at the time being mildly obsessed with her collection Loba 4y

There is no #LoveLost between the Beats and I, but I was very excited to- finally!- come across a woman's perspective on that movement. DiPrima's memoir, published in the #SummerOf69, didn't specifically surprise or move me, but I appreciated her voice in the mix. #SongsOfSummer #JazzyJune

Has anyone read this?
Since I'm a fan of Jack Kerouac, I thought this read may be enjoyable.

vivastory I've read this, I definitely recommend. I had the immense privilege of meeting her at a reading at St Mark's in NY in 2001. 8y
Jas16 I have. Her true memoir is Reflections of My Life as a Woman. I saw her speak years ago and she said that when she wrote memoirs of a beatnik she realized she would get paid more the more salacious she made it. So it more erotic fiction than most people anticipate. 8y
JenniferJarrell I adore her poetry. 8y
SoniaC Read it and would recommend it as long as your ok with it being a little racey. @Jas16 is definitely correct. 8y
