Prelude to a Riot
Prelude to a Riot | Annie Zaidi

In a peaceful southern town, amidst lush spice plantations, trouble is brewing. In the town live three generations of two families, one Hindu and the other Muslim, whose lives will be changed forever by the coming violence. At risk are Dada, the ageing grandfather who lovingly tends and talks to the plants on his estate; his strong-willed grandchildren, Abu and Fareeda; the newly married Devaki who cannot fathom the forces that are turning her husband and her father into fanatics; Mariam, of the gifted hands, who kneads and pounds the fatigued muscles of tourists into submission; and Garuda, the high-school teacher who, in his own desperate way, is trying to impart the truth about the country's history to a classroom of uninterested students. Quietly but surely, the spectre of religious intolerance is beginning to haunt the community in the guise of the Self-Respect Forum whose mission is to divide the town and destroy the delicate balance of respect and cooperation that has existed for hundreds of years.

I‘m gonna be a typical American and make this book about us. But this is easily something that could have been written here. It takes place in an unnamed town in India. There are two families, one Hindu and the other Muslim. A group called The Self Respect forum will come into town and fan the flames of hate. This book was spectacular and lovely. The writing is poetic and each chapter is told from the point of view of a different character. 👇🏼

Reggie A history teacher trying to teach his apathetic students the lessons of history they are doomed to repeat. A lonely housewife horrified at the hate her husband and father have wrapped around themselves towards people they have known. A grandfather who is trying to impart, above all, love to his family. And sometimes the chapters are just poems, love poems and poems of protest. I loved this book. ❤️ 3y

Centique Wow- this sounds so good! 3y
Centique Can I ask you for a recc? I‘m thinking of getting daughter a Stephen King novel for Christmas. I want to get her a really addictive page turner as she hasn‘t been reading much lately. But not TOO scary (or weird orgy scenes like I‘ve heard happens in IT 😂) what‘s your recc for starting a relationship with SK? 3y
Reggie @Centique This book was soooo good. Also, does it have to be Stephen King just because I would want to give her a horror book with a female protagonist like Grady Hendrix‘s My Best Friend‘s Exorcism which is about the power of teenage girl friendship and still is a little gross at times. But if it has to be Stephen King ( @vivastory @TrishB can ya‘ll help me out I haven‘t read any of his new stuff) but I would say Desperation , Salem‘s Lot, 👇🏼 3y
Reggie The Stand because we are living in pandemic times. And lastly, Firestarter. 3y
Reggie @Centique I would say Carrie just because the main character is a teenage girl but I haven‘t read it. 3y
Reggie It‘s so funny on that list of 60 books he‘s written I‘ve read almost 30 of them and yet I feel like I‘ve read none of him. 3y
Centique @Reggie that Best Friends Exorcism sounds GOOD! That could be the go. Happy to take more reccs though if anyone else wants to chip in 😘 3y
vivastory @Centique I second Grady Hendrix. My Best Friends Exorcism is great. I also loved We Sold Our Souls. If you're looking for a King book I would recommend the Bill Hodges trilogy. It has a wide cast of characters, including Holly Gibney who is one of my favorites that King has ever written. They are thrillers with a paranormal twist & very addictive. 3y
TrishB I would go with @vivastory rec- that trilogy has a good mix of SK brilliance and great characters. 3y
Centique Thank you so much! @vivastory @TrishB 😘 3y
