Forever entwined, Sea and Serene live isolated in the Australian alpine wilderness, together with Wren - the young man who helps care for them. Each have found peace in this wild, fierce landscape, and they live in harmony, largely self-sufficient. One day Wren discovers a woman on the road nearby, badly injured and unconscious. He brings her back to the cottage, and he and the twins nurse her back to health. But the arrival of this outsider shatters the dynamic within, with unforeseen consequences. Lyrical and poetic, Fusion is a unique and haunting modern-gothic tale that has at its heart questions of selfhood, dependency, difference and love. It is the compelling first novel by the award-winning author of Madness: A Memoir.

Pickpick

Hmm, I‘m not sure how I feel about this debut novel 🧐. It is beautifully written in a kind of gothic style. I found it hard to get traction though and wanted more in terms of plot and character development. It felt somehow unfinished 🤔.

Kate Richards is one clever and interesting Australian author and I look forward to what she comes up with next.

This is an intriguing, ethereal book. Told from the perspective of conjoined twins Sea and Serene.

Here the twins are eavesdropping on Wren and ‘Christ‘ who are talking about them.

There‘s gotta be some advantages to staying home with a sick kid 🤧. A leisurely breakfast (his was two soft boiled eggs with toast soldiers) and then reading with him on the couch 💕.

Freespirit Sounds like a perfect day! 4y

Kate Richards is an Australian Doctor who wrote an amazing book about her experience of mental illness that I‘ve raved about on here previously, Madness: a memoir. I saw her speak in Bali last year and she was so compassionate and warm and clever.

I‘m not sure how I missed this, her first novel, published last year 🤔. I saw it in my favourite bookstore today and had to have it.

How clever and eerie is this cover?
