Grand Days | Frank Moorhouse

Grand Days by Frank Moorhouse is wonderful. It‘s a chunkster but it kept my interest. Set in Geneva in the 1920‘s, telling the story of Edith Campbell Berry who starts her career at the League of Nations. Edith is wonderful ..naive yet sophisticated, loyal, brave and wise for her years. She‘s also playful and very modern!! Some of the issues she deals with women still deal with today!!

On to The Bluest Eye..
@CarolynM loved it❤️

This is a solid crime thriller. Four friends visiting a remote island and only 3 return. For me it was the setting that resonated….Iceland. A perfect place for a murder..isolated and beautiful. My last overseas holiday before Covid hit was to Iceland in 2019. Such a wonderful destination!! Oh how I miss travel😍

My second book in The Eliot Quartet. This is another poignant beautifully written novel. It is based on TS Eliot‘s poem Little Gidding. A War story telling of the Blitz in London, a love story, and like the poem a story of trying to move forward after tragic events. It took me a couple of chapters to get into it but after that…❤️❤️

I loved this book. Why…a retelling…a mix of of fact and fiction! The story of TS Eliot‘s wife Vivienne…some early history, an investigation by a wonderful policeman. Beautifully written. It‘s a joy to read. Consequently I have gone straight to another of his Eliot Quartet so I don‘t have a book hangover 😂😂

@CarolynM and I are reading this book together. It‘s about the wife of TS Eliot. She was placed in a private asylum and this is Steven Carrols story…part fact, part fiction. I‘m 1/4 through and already loving it!
It‘s the 4th book in his Eliot Quartet.
Carolyn I also like that it has some early life stories and the police investigation as the story develops. The character of the detective❤️Lovely writing..occasional references to cricket also❤️✔️

CarolynM You must have posted while I was writing my post. I couldn‘t stop reading. Such beautiful writing and such a sad story. “Aunty” was not a friend to Vivienne. 4mo

Wow We Have Always Lived in the Castle is such a powerful short novel! An atmospheric Gothic thriller..with 2 young women left alone after all other members of the family are murdered..disliked by the community they live in..tragic, strange, and fascinating to read about the author who who suffered from agoraphobia and other physical and mental conditions..and died at 48!
And onto a book about the wife TS Eliot written by a great Aussie author!

The Islands is a beautiful book. A story of Finnish migrants travelling to live on remote Islands off the Western Australian coast. How brave they are to relocate, how hard it is to try to assimilate. This story is based on the authors family who were fisherman from Finland. 4 1/2 ⭐️❤️
The second book a portrait of our PM…who is he..what does he believe..what does he stand for…this book reinforces views I already held…hoping he‘ll be gone soon!!!

CarolynM I enjoyed reading Concetta Fierravanti-Wells's speech, although it's unfortunate she felt able to support him until now. 6mo

I have just finished Apeirogon and I think it will stay with me for a long time. Told using short snippets of information and related facts. Set in Israel, it touches on the relationship between Jewish and Palestinian residents. At times I had to reach for google to look up a location, or more information about a fascinating historical story. A story of love and hope, and making the most of a terrible situation💗
Next another story of love.💓✌🏼

Freespirit @carolynm your right he definitely sounded like he had mental health issues!! 12mo

Pat Barker is a wonderful writer. This year I have read The Silence of the Girls and now Regeneration. This book is based on true events…it‘s 1917..soldiers suffering from shell-shock are treated by psychiatrist Rivers in a hospital in Scotland. Two of the soldiers are writers Siegfried Sassoon and Wilfred Owen. This is book 1 of a trilogy that I shall have to pursue!
Next on the list is The Labyrinth, which won the Miles Franklin literary award.

TrishB I‘ve yet to read the Regeneration trilogy though I‘ve had it forever! 12mo
CarolynM Even though I love Regeneration I've never managed to read the other 2 books in the trilogy (long story I'll tell you in person one day) I hope I will read them one day. Look forward to seeing what you think of The Labyrinth. 12mo
BarbaraBB I loved this trilogy. It had such a big impact on me when I read it. 12mo

Freespirit Hi @TrishB it was recommended to me..everyone speaks so highly of the trilogy. She managed to make a difficult subject very readable. I usually avoid war books. 12mo
Freespirit @CarolynM one day we will discuss this over coffee at a Melbourne cafe.. it‘s on my bucket list!! I‘ll let you know how The Labyrinth goes😘 12mo
Freespirit Hi @BarbaraBB I will definitely get the next two books. 👍🏼 12mo

Hi friends I have been spending much of my free time in my garden and vegetable patch, and neglecting Litsy. I‘m reading Regeneration by Pat Barker..she‘s such a great writer, but I haven‘t got into it..probably thinking about my cauliflowers 😂😂
It‘s spring here and warm and dry already so I‘m madly planting seeds and mulching. It‘s fun growing your own food..almost as good as reading!!!

kspenmoll Your gardens look great- what a beautiful bounty!!! 12mo
Freespirit Thankyou @kspenmoll we eat from it everyday. It‘s good for my soul😊 12mo
CarolynM I love that book❤️ I've got a thing about Sassoon (and Graves and Owen) l've read about a new film called Benediction which is based on Sassoon. I hope it will be on in the cinema when lockdown finally ends. And your garden is beautiful 😍 12mo

SamAnne Beautiful garden! I usually do a big one as well but dialed back this year. Got a little burned out and wanted to,spend more time outdoors. Picked a good, year to dial back with the heat and drought where I live. But….will be back at it next year I think. 12mo
Freespirit Hi @CarolynM yes he‘s an interesting character…what traumas these men had to deal with…I admire Rivers for his gentle approach. Ooh I must look out for the movie. Hope your ok..such a difficult time for everyone! Xxx (edited) 12mo
Freespirit Thanks @SamAnne it‘s a wonderful pass time but you do need a break from it.. especially after a drought. We only have tank water so I sometimes have to leave my veggies. Good luck with the next season!!! 12mo
Chelsea.Poole Gorgeous garden!! 🍅🥬🌽 I agree, eating fresh vegetables, nothing like it! We have a small one going but we love it 😍 12mo
BookNAround What a gorgeous garden! I‘m so jealous. I kill plants just looking at them. ☹️ 12mo
Freespirit Thanks @Chelsea.Poole it‘s great isn‘t eat eating from the garden🪴 12mo
Freespirit Ha ha @BookNAround I‘ve learnt as I go..I used to kill the odd plant also 12mo

Waterland | Graham Swift
post image
Pickpick

I have read two Graham Swift novels in a row! First Mothering Sunday now Waterland. What a marvellous writer he is!
This book is complex yet very readable. It‘s a family saga told by a school teacher to his history class. He tells his family history with all its grief and tragedy. And it tells a story of water, specifically The Fens in England, referencing historical events. I will look out for his other books 📚 #literature

Mothering Sunday..loved it, love the title and love the cover❤️ which is from a painting by Modigliani.
Easy to read in one sitting, it‘s a tale of Jane Fairchild..a “foundling” who becomes a maid….sensual and thought provoking....a real gem❤️

CarolynM Lovely review. I have a copy on the shelf, I must read it one day...🙂 13mo

This I read after reading recommendations by @CarolynM and other Litsy friends. Loved it!! Gentle yet wise..that‘s Alexandra Bergson battling life in the tough landscape of America‘s Midwest early last century.
A quote”people have to snatch at happiness when they can, in this world. It is always easier to lose than to find”
I hope your snatching some happiness today!

CarolynM I'm glad you enjoyed it🙂 There's no other writer quite like Willa Cather. There's a third book in the Prairie trilogy called Song of the Lark. All her books are worth reading. My other favourite of hers is quite different from the Prairie novels 14mo
Freespirit I have ordered Song of the Lark, My Antonio and Death Comes for the Bishop @CarolynM 👍🏼such lovely writing ❤️ 14mo

This was not what I expected.. I skimmed a lot which I hate doing. It just didn‘t hold my interest after the first hundred pages.
Oh well on to the next book…or some embroidery 😍 I must be getting fussy in my old age😂😂😂

Buechersuechtling @Freespirit I often catch myself thinking so, too (getting fussy), and just reached “middle ages”. 🙃 14mo

This is the background to “Bertha” the wife of Mr Rochester in Jane Eyre. I love and have re-read Jane Eyre several times. The story around Antoinette Cosway has always intrigued me. This feels like a gothic tale…it‘s sad..I don‘t want to ruin it if you haven‘t read Jane Eyre..is there such a reader out there😂😂
Next for me is a book that‘s been on the bedside pile for a while The Family Doctor.
Happy reading everyone 😘😘

I haven‘t been reading as much as I‘ve been spending time in my veggie patch whilst we are having this perfect winter weather!!
I just finished Templar Silks which I enjoyed but it didn‘t engage me like Hilary Mantel or Ken Follett‘s books do. Next on my list is Wide Sargasso Sea, which I‘ve wanted to read for ages as I love Jane Eyre💕
Here is a pic of one of my raised beds and a cauliflower. I‘ve found gardening and reading is good for my soul

Ruthiella Amazing! That cauliflower is impressive. 🤩 (edited) 1y
Lizpixie Oh I‘m so jelly of your cauliflower! I tried to grow them last winter and all I got was leaf, the heads never formed. I think I planted them too late in autumn. Gardening was my saviour last year too, haven‘t been able to do much this autumn/winter but my fruit trees are loaded🍊🍋🍎🫐 (edited) 1y
Christine A cauliflower for the ages!! 💚🤍 1y

Thanks @LeeRHarry for the tag 😊
📕I have read the Anne of Green Gables series many times growing up! As an adult I re-read my favourite classics occasionally. They are The Count of Monte Christo, Jane Eyre, and The Moonstone or The Women in White.
📕I don‘t pay much attention to the cover..it‘s a review or recommendation for me.
📕Wilding is a brilliant story of allowing nature to do its own thing and watching the transformation💕

This has been highly recommended to me. I have only read the first few pages but I can tell it‘s going to be a really interesting read. It‘s 1942..a group of Jewish Refugees from Germany form a squad trained in counterintelligence and combat. This is a true story.. always the most fascinating!!
Have you read this one Cindy? @Cinfhen

Cinfhen No, but I‘m VERY INTERESTED!! Thanks for tagging me. Please keep me posted on your thoughts 😘 1y

One of my favourite places in Sydney is Abbeys book shop. Since Covid started I have not been to visit🙁. As Sydney is now in lockdown again I am purchasing a few books every few months in way of support! I would hate it if they shut!!
Some books here that I have read about on Litsy or heard about on the ABC bookshow📕📮
Happy reading everyone🌻

LeahBergen What a lovely bunch of reads. 😊 1y
Freespirit They all sound good Leah @LeahBergen 1y
CarolynM Abbeys is my favourite bookshop too, I used to go there a lot when I was in Sydney a lot in the 2010s. Good on you for supporting them during the Sydney lockdown. I'm going to bet that you will love O Pioneers! Wills Cather is such great writer. Have you read any other of her novels? And, of course, Elizabeth Peters's novels are the best escapist reading🙂 (edited) 1y
Freespirit Carolyn I haven‘t read anything by Willa Cather…it is because of your love of it that I bought O Pioneers The Leopard and Mothering Sunday were discussed on The Bookshelf. Hope you are doing ok..locking down again @CarolynM 😊 1y

Perfect cold wet weather reading spot and novel!! Archie loves it too😊
I love Gary Disher‘s writing..it‘s crisp and clean and so Australian. He manages to weave several stories around a central narrative, still keeping me interested. Living in a small country town myself, I love the descriptions of people and place!!
I really recommend his books if you want a taste of Aussie country❤️

The End of Men | Christina Sweeney-Baird
post image

A world-wide pandemic that only kills men? This was certainly interesting, more so because of our current situation with COVID-19. Each chapter is a different women‘s story, following their lives as they navigate the loss of husbands and sons, the search for the source of the virus, a vaccine and the way the world changed post pandemic. It‘s a little bit déjà vu ?
3 1/2 ⭐️⭐️⭐️
#virus #pandemic

TrishB I read my first fiction book this week where the author wrote during lockdown and incorporated pandemic stuff 😯 still not sure about it! 1y
Freespirit I know what you mean Trish..sometimes living through something and reading about it is too much! @TrishB 1y
TrishB I can understand why as she‘d dated each chapter and it wouldn‘t have been real. It was just a bit miserable. Maybe when we‘re all through it! 1y
