#MayCharacters Day 7: Henry Brown definitely qualifies as a character who #migrates - in the most extreme way possible at the time. Looking forward to reading and reviewing this title.

PatriciaS Your review of this book was great, I put it on my to read list 4y
Spearsall I love this review you posted! The illustrations caught my attention first, then after reading your description I have to add it to my list. It is hard to find good books that are easy to read while being a poem so I love this. Also while teaching students about what used to happen! Love love love. Thank you for including a lesson plan as well with the EL strategies 💫💫 4y
Vanvlieta Adding this to my stack! Thanks for sharing this book with us.(: I would love to incorporate poetry into my classroom, so this seems like a great book to use when doing so! Plus, this book will allow us to integrate Social Studies AND Reading / ELA all into the same lesson!! WE LOVE THAT👏🏻 4y

Cruelty upon cruelty. I felt this poem was one of the most striking and heartbreaking in the entire book, yet also so beautifully written. 💔

What a powerful book this was, and what an incredible true story! How hard that must have been to always feel that your family could be torn away from you at any moment. What did you think, @BucklingBookshelves ? #buddyread

BucklingBookshelves Agree! Weatherford‘s writing is always excellent and it was great to see this true story written in poetry receive an Honor this year. Have you read the Caldecott picture book about Henry Brown? It‘s been awhile, but it was also very good with excellent artwork by Kadir Nelson. I want to reread it now to compare side-by-side. It‘s always interesting, I think, to see how different authors tell the same story in such a short format of a book. 4y
BucklingBookshelves The tearing apart of families is just one of the myriad injustices of slavery, but one that cuts deep. So heartbreaking that they were never reunited, but that was the horrific reality for so many. I‘ll post one of the poems that really struck me that also speaks to this. 4y
smilingshelves @BucklingBookshelves I thought I had run across this story before! I bet I was thinking of Henry's Freedom Box. I'm glad Henry's story is still known in the world through these books. It's an important one! 4y
