Ericka Waller's Dog Days is a debut novel about the way dogs can bring out the best in us in the face of life's challenges. George is a grumpy, belligerent old man who has just lost his wife. She has left him notes around the home and a miniature dachshund puppy called Poppy. But George doesnt want a dog, he wants to fight everyone who is trying to help him. Dan has OCD but has channeled his energy into his career as a therapist. Afraid to acknowledge his true feelings, his most meaningful relationship so far is with his dog Fitz. That is, until Atticus walks into his life. Lizzie is living in a womens refuge with her son Lenny. Her body is covered in scars and she has shut herself off from the world. She distrusts dogs, but when she starts having to walk the refuges dog, Maud, things begin to change. As three strangers' lives unravel and intersect, they ultimately must accept what fate has in store for them with their dogs by their sides. Set against the backdrop of Brighton, Dog Days is an inspiring, unflinching, and deeply moving novel about life, and the way dogs can help us understand it, and each other, a little better.

This is a story about three people and their lives, how they cope, the help this receive and trying to find joy. It's sad and emotional.

Mehso-so

I'm so conflicted about this book. It certainly wasn't predictable, it did a good job of confounding my expectations of this kind of story and mostly I enjoyed reading it. BUT it's one of the most un-PC things I've read in years. While it might be argued it is just illustrating some people's different reality (examples in spoiler comments) I'm having trouble getting away from the idea that it's deliberate and reactionary. I feel a bit grubby.

CarolynM Foul mouthed sexist, racist, homophobic & just plain rude old man who gets away with it 😤Apparently abused wife turns out to have abused husband & runaway with their child - she's also autistic and suffering from postnatal depression because of course people with those conditions do terrible things and are clearly unfit parents😡 Tragic gay love affair😖 3y
TrishB I totally agree with the non PC narrative- I think it was done on purpose and sadly there are very many of these old, rude men saying exactly what was being said. I guessed about the PND and this was the most 😡😢 to me- I don‘t think this was written well. Most unrealistic. It‘s certainly not the warm book the cover and blurb suggest! 3y
CarolynM @TrishB No doubt there's lots of those men, but everyone put up with him (Betty even professed to like him!), the implication being he's not such a bad bloke, he just doesn't know how to socialise. No! Not ok. As for Lizzie, where do I start? So much about that strand was problematic. And Atticus the openly gay guy is suicidal - well obviously he couldn't be happy could he? The L & A strands seem to deliberately challenge tolerance of difference. 3y

TrishB Brilliant points 👍🏻 does make you question why. 3y
Centique And I‘m unstacking it! Don‘t have the patience for those kinds of things at the moment. How are you doing? 3y
CarolynM @Centique It's not a bad read, but I really do wonder whether the author was deliberately pushing back against the "woke agenda". It's all very well to take your story in an unexpected direction, but when you put it all of incidents in this book together it feels reactionary to me. We're still OK, a bit sick of it and a bit disheartened by today's number though. How are you? 3y
Centique @CarolynM yes I feel disheartened along with you. 💕 I am hoping for better news once we get a higher vaccination rate, although that may be wishful thinking🤞🤞I had my second jab yesterday and am a bit under the weather today but not too bad. 3y

I did genuinely think this was going to be a bit soppy for me after the first couple of chapters, but carried on, because dogs 🐶
But then it wasn‘t soppy and was quite deep and sad, whilst also being quirky and funny.
Turned into a definite pick.
Hope you‘re enjoying it Carolyn, I had a lovely Saturday just reading it.

CarolynM I only read the first couple of chapters yesterday. We had a zoom dinner party with friends in other locked down parts of the country which took up the whole evening. Glad you enjoyed 🙂 3y
TrishB That sounds fun 👍🏻 3y

Starting this one today.
Carolyn - it was an unplanned start - it just shouted at me from the pile 😁 if you can fit into your plans.

CarolynM As I've just finished one book and hadn't chosen my next one yet, it's good timing 🙂 Saves me having to make a decision which is always a good thing. 3y
TrishB @CarolynM totally agree! 3y

Set in Brighton, this book revolves around three characters and the relationships in their lives- including their dogs. Cantankerous George is grieving and counselor Dan is coming to terms with his own growing up while Lizzie struggles to deal with her family situation. It‘s surprisingly funny at times and also brought me to tears! The dogs are a constant throughout and I quite enjoyed this one with my own dog by my side! Just hit the shelves 5/11

Marmie7 Beautiful doggy 🐕! 3y

4 ⭐⭐⭐⭐ This is a funny and quirky book, with some really great characters and their dogs. I admit I wasn‘t sure about this book until I‘d finished the second chapter and then I was hooked. I also have a favourite pair which is George and his little dog Poppy. George also has some great one lines that had me laughing out loud. There should also be a warning with the book as unfortunately there is a suicide which could be a trigger for some people.

A delightful story with wonderfully depicted characters. Beautifully written, it‘s emotional as well as having humorous moments. There is quite a dark side to the tale, some of which is heart wrenching. The dogs play a small but significant part in the story and they add a big note of hope. A dog truly is man‘s best friend. A fabulous read - I was sad to turn the last page. #Pigeonhole
