A Most Anticipated Book of 2021 by Oprah Magazine • Vulture • Essence • Elle • Cosmopolitan • Real Simple • Refinery 29 • She Reads • The Everygirl • Career Contessa “You are carrying in your hands a Black woman’s heart.”—Jericho Brown, author of Pulitzer Prize winner The Tradition “[Mans’] lucid and lyrical lines are as undeniable as those of a pop song yet as arresting as only spoken word artistry can be.”—O, the Oprah Magazine From spoken word poet Jasmine Mans comes an unforgettable poetry collection about race, feminism, and queer identity. With echoes of Gwendolyn Brooks and Sonia Sanchez, Mans writes to call herself—and us—home. Each poem explores what it means to be a daughter of Newark, and America—and the painful, joyous path to adulthood as a young, queer Black woman. Black Girl, Call Home is a love letter to the wandering Black girl and a vital companion to any woman on a journey to find truth, belonging, and healing.

I'm really loving my journey into poetry this year. Favorite poem (which is so hard to choose) was Footnotes for Kanye where she called him out using his own lyrics. I read it at least three times.

March #bookspin and #nonfiction2023

HOTPock3tt I downloaded this book earlier this year from the library and it returned before I could get to it. But now that I hear there is a Kanye poem I just HAVE to read it 🤣 12mo

Emotionally-charged poetry, and so amazing. "My Sister's Keeper" made me tear up.

This is a work of art! I will read and re-read it until my copy falls apart. Loved every word, saw myself, my sisters, my family in these pages.

A book of poems discussing both the hardships the author has faced as a black woman as well as (some of the hardships) black women as a group have had to endure. So many trigger warnings. So gut wrenching. A quick, yet powerful read

I just finished this wonderful collection of poetry by Jasmine Mans. In Black Girl, Call Home she touches on feminist issues, and what it means to be a queer Black Woman. I found each poem to be piercing, as good poetry should be. I can only imagine how amazing they would sound if performed.

this is a powerful collection. some poems hit my heart, some hit old wounds i thought had healed, some added questions to my already long questions about the meaning of life while others missed the mark completely and left me confused. this is definitely a collection i will return to over the years.
