At the End of the Matinee
At the End of the Matinee | Keiichir? Hirano
5 posts | 2 read | 5 to read
Bestselling author Keiichiro Hirano offers a timeless ode to love's fragility and its resilience in this delicate, award-winning novel. Classical guitarist Satoshi Makino has toured the world and is at the height of his career when he first lays eyes on journalist Yoko Komine. Their bond forms instantly. Upon their first meeting, after Makino's concert in Tokyo, they begin a conversation that will go on for years, with long spells of silence broken by powerful moments of connection. She's drawn by Makino's tender music and his sensitivity, and he is intrigued by Yoko's refinement and intellect. But neither knows enough about love to see it blooming nor has the confidence to make the first move. Will their connection endure, weaving them back together like instruments in a symphony, or will fate lead them apart? Blending the harmonies of Kazuo Ishiguro's Nocturnes and the sensuality of Ian McEwan's Enduring Love, At the End of the Matinee is an enchanting and thought-provoking love story.

Such beautifully written sentences! I loved the two main characters and their dual POV. My one complaint is that there are only 9 chapters in the book, which made for some super long reading sessions for me.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ This book is wonderful not just because of the love story of the immediate and enduring connection between two people, but because of how beautifully it's written (take the highlighted passage as an example), and the subject matter it touches on - the world of classical guitar (Makino) is masterfully handled, as is his writing about Yoko's journalism, Iraq and refugees. It was a joy to read even when it made me sad. Highly recommended.

I'm taking a break from Empire of Pain to read this recommendation from my sister. It's quite dense and I've only read 80 pages so far, but it's beautifully written and I'm enjoying its slow, descriptive style.

Amazon has a selection of free books to download and keep for World Book Day :) I don't think you even need a Prime account, you just need a base Amazon account to claim them, and a Kindle account to read them.

vlwelser Thanks for the reminder! I usually download half the books and read none of them. I don't think it's just Prime customers. Or it isn't usually. 4y
