Evelyn Del Rey Is Moving Away
Evelyn Del Rey Is Moving Away | Meg Medina
3 posts | 5 read | 2 to read
From Newbery Medalist Meg Medina comes the bittersweet story of two girls who will always be each others nmero uno, even though one is moving away. A big truck with its mouth wide open is parked at the curb, ready to gobble up Evelyns mirror with the stickers around the edge . . . and the sofa that we bounce on to get to the moon. Evelyn Del Rey is Danielas best friend. They do everything together and even live in twin apartments across the street from each other: Daniela with her mami and hamster, and Evelyn with her mami, papi, and cat. But not after todaynot after Evelyn moves away. Until then, the girls play amid the moving boxes until its time to say goodbye, making promises to keep in touch, because they know that their friendship will always be special. The tenderness of Meg Medinas beautifully written story about friendship and change is balanced by Sonia Snchezs colorful and vibrant depictions of the girls urban neighborhood.

I just finished reading this to all my students and they had the FEELS. All of them could relate to missing a friend. The last page wowed us. We talked about flashback as a literary device. I shared some letter writing techniques for our activity that may be lost in the digital age. They were inspired to write. #WCCPBA nominee 2022 #readoutloud ☆☆☆☆☆

SolaRaynor So awesome that you taught the kids letter writing techniques! 2y
mandarchy @SolaRaynor my grandmother was born in 1901 and she taught me a few things. The kids were fascinated. I was really pleased with their writing. I mean, start with about yourself - away they went! 2y
ShelleyBooksie Beautiful illustrations 2y
mandarchy @ShelleyBooksie the illustrations have subtle clues that add to the story and cinch up how good it is. As I'm reading the kids would gasp when I turned the page. 2y

Nominated for the WCCPBA 2022. Two friends savoring their last moments together before one moves away. While steeped in sorrow and nostalgia, the narrator seeks a positive new long distance friendship that includes letter writing. It might be a great way to start the year and include taking a moment to send notes to students who have moved away and may be missed - or former teachers. #WCCPBA #everybodybooks #readforperspective #readoutloud

“Evelyn Del Rey is Moving Away” by Meg Medina and illustrated by Sonia Sánchez

Jumpstart Read for the Record, American Library Association Notable Children‘s Book

The story of two friends is a relatable tale to kids. Although they are separated, they will always be each other's numero uno friend. This text can use many teaching strategies, but partner read can focus on vocabulary as provided in the front of book.

ToddSalerno The book has a resource in the front with target vocabulary to pre-teach. (ESOL 23- Structure advance organizers consisting for new terminology that learners will encounter in the new lesson vocabulary to be reviewed.) (UDL 2.1 clarify vocabulary and symbols)

DrSpalding I like that you not only cited jumpstart but also that you went directly to the author. There is truly no better resource than the author or publisher for these fabulous books. I specifically like that this book teaches Spanish words and phrases. This would meet another English learner strategy in addition to the one that you noted. Pre-teaching vocabulary is very important and assists students and better comprehending the stories. 3y
