Rudin | Ivan Sergeyevich Turgenev
Pickpick

This is perhaps not an astonishing piece of literature, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. It's a typically Russian story (with mainly lots of talking and various uninteresting romances) about a supposedly very promising man who just can't find his place in society. Beautifully written, of course! It's Turgenev, after all.

ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled Turgenev is all about the lost guy bumbling around society perplexed!! ❤️ 8y

We drove to Sweden today to stock up on wine and food you can't get in Norway. Taking the ferry back means I finally get some reading time and possibly finish Rudin ? Oh, and some "coffee" ?

RealLifeReading I like the sound of your "coffee" 8y
tricours @RealLifeReading The ferry is freezing cold so it's purely a matter of survival! 🙃 8y

Merethebookgal Sounds like a nice time, and your drink looks delicious! 8y
Mayread I do love how that part of the world understands the importance of warm alcoholic beverages. 8y
readinginthedark That sounds amazing! I wish I could take day trips to a completely different place! American problems. 😕 8y
tricours @readinginthedark how many hours to your closest border? 8y
tricours @Skiles do you live in a winterless place? 8y
readinginthedark I live in Missouri, so smack-dab in the middle of the U.S. I could get to Illinois in less than an hour probably. Cahokia Mounds is right across the state border and very fascinating! And I can't really complain being so close to St. Louis--it's the "Gateway to the West!" 8y
tricours @readinginthedark ah, that does make it a bit far, yes! You probably have way more cities to visit though, we really don't 😄 We can go to Denmark as well in a couple of hours, but not there and back in a day, so we haven't done that yet. I'd like that more though, Denmark is more exotic than Sweden! Traveling inside Norway takes quite some time since it's all mountains. 8y
Mayread @tricours I live in southern California on the coast, so winter here rarely gets below 32F // 0C. I've never seen it snow before here & have gone hiking in short sleeves during Dec. Jan. I'm from a cold climate, so I find it very silly when people complain & turn on the heat when we reach the part of the year in which jackets, sweaters & socks are required. I grab a hot water bottle & a mug of something warm instead. 8y
readinginthedark @tricours That sounds amazing! I've always wanted to go to Norway and that whole area. The only place I've been in Europe is Germany, which was beautiful. 8y

? "So tell me, brother, for the love of God!" Volyntsev said, "What is this? Philosophy?"
"What can I say? On the one side, yes, that's just what it is. But on the other side, no, not at all. You can't just blame any nonsense on philosophy."

...among other things, he started arguing that people, just like dogs, come both with and without a tail. "There are people who are tailless both from birth and from their own doing. The tailless have a difficult time of it: nothing they do is a success, they lack confidence. But a man with a long and fluffy tail, he is happy. --->

But really, here's what's worth wondering at: isn't the tail a completely useless part of the body? Seriously, what good is a tail? Yet everyone judges you based on your tail!" 8y

Whenever you see Latin letters in classical Russian literature, you can be pretty sure it's French. Russian as a literary language is actually a rather late invention, and French was all the rage among the upper classes. Here a woman thinks in French (with a typo ?), then she adds another thought which she "pronounces in Russian in her mind". #russianliterature #classics

I'm enjoying the book so far, and Rudin just entered the stage! It's a great example of the pointlessness of upper class 19th century Russian society. Their boring "salon" party definitely needs some alcohol! ?? (My other cat is more reading compatible, this one cuddles too violently.) #russianliterature #classics

Rudin sounds like the kind of Russian novel I will hate, so here we go! 😀
