Helgoland | Carlo Rovelli
6 posts | 3 read | 4 to read
The new book from the bestselling author of Seven Brief Lessons on Physics and The Order of Time One idea, more than any other, has transformed our understanding of the fabric of the universe: the quantum. Now Carlo Rovelli illuminates its mysteries. In June 1925, twenty-three-year-old Werner Heisenberg, suffering from hay fever, retreated to a treeless, wind-battered island in the North Sea called Helgoland. It was there that he came up with the key insight behind quantum mechanics. A century later, this theory has given us modern technology and nuclear energy but remains disconcerting, enigmatic and fiercely debated. Helgoland is the story of quantum physics and its bright young founders who were to become some of the most famous Nobel winners. It is a celebration of youthful rebellion and intellectual revolution. It is a transformative journey. Here Carlo Rovelli, a master storyteller and influential scientist, illuminates competing interpretations and offers his own original theory: the 'relational' interpretation of quantum mechanics, where the world is fundamentally made of relations and events rather than permanent substances. Where we, as every other thing around us, exist in our interactions with one another, in a never-ending game of mirrors. A riveting voyage, full of wonder and delight, Helgoland revolutionizes our understanding of the universe and our place in it.

Pickpick

”Not to fear rethinking the world is the power of science.” I love the way Italian physicist Carlo Rovelli‘s writing helps me to take a step back from everyday concerns and to view things from a larger picture. Quantum physics, even when written for the lay person, is still pretty heady stuff, but I find it soothing. Translation by Erica Segre and Simon Carnell; audiobook read by David Rintoul.

rabbitprincess I have the audio of The Order of Time entirely for Benedict Cumberbatch reasons 😂 3y
Lindy @rabbitprincess That was a five-star listen for me too... for Carlo Rovelli reasons. 😁 3y

The conviction on which this book is based is that we human beings are a part of nature.

The world that we observe is continuously interacting. It is a dense web of interactions. Individual objects are the way in which they interact. […] The world that we know, that relates to us, that interests us, what we call reality, is the vast web of interacting entities of which we are a part, that manifest themselves by interacting with each other.

It's Mr B's subscription day again. They chose this one for me - quite excited to become an expert on quantum physics. Shouldn't take long I assume. Daisy is particularly excited to learn about Schrodinger's cat for some reason.

What did you get @mitch ?

TrishB Wow 😳 we‘ll wait whilst you learn! 4y
Oryx @TrishB I'll provide a full overview at the next book club - you'll be experts too. 4y
Oryx @TrishB Apparently it's kind of accessible to read... Let's hope I don't ditch after two chapters as I did with 4y

Simona Yesterday I finished .... and it‘s the fictional story based on true events/persons from quantum physics world (except last chapter) 4y
Mitch Looks fab 4y
Mitch As soon as I opened mine - thought of you and wondered what was in your parcel! 4y
julesG Honestly, you're not helping with #MountARC... @Simona 4y
TrishB If it‘s written do 10 yr olds understand I‘ll be ok 👍🏻 my lovely copy of The Lamplighters arrived 😁 it‘s even nicer in real life! 4y
Caroline2 Oh interesting! Can‘t wait to hear what you think of it. 😉 4y
