Havana Year Zero
Havana Year Zero | Karla Suárez
4 posts | 2 read | 1 to read
It was as if we’d reached the minimum critical point of a mathematical curve. Imagine a parabola. Zero point down, at the bottom of an abyss. That’s how low we sank. The year is 1993. Cuba is at the height of the Special Period, a widespread economic crisis following the collapse of the Soviet bloc. For Julia, a mathematics lecturer who hates teaching, this is Year Zero: the lowest possible point. But a way out appears: the search for a missing document that will prove the telephone was invented in Havana, secure her reputation, and give Cuba a purpose once more. What begins as an investigation into scientific history becomes a tangle of sex, friendship, family legacies, and the intricacies of how people find ways to survive in a country at its lowest ebb.

Pickpick

In 1993 Cuba is in its worst economic crisis. In desperate times Julia, a young math professor whose career is stuck, hears of a lost scientific document which she believes can bring her renown. Julia‘s search reveals others who seek to rescue themselves with this document. Julia says she is thinking mathematically but I didn‘t see that. Although the plot device is ridiculous, Suárez expertly sets up a fascinating world and realistic characters.

I didn‘t manage to find any Cuban food this month unfortunately, but I am using my last day in the Lake District with my boyfriends family to read this book set in Cuba in the 90s after the fall of the societ Union. I don‘t know that I love the book for the plot and writing but I am enjoying learning more about cuba, I think this is my first ever Cuban novel

sarahbarnes I might have to read this! My partner is Cuban and I‘m always on the lookout for interesting reads from Cuban writers. 2y

Mehso-so

Finished! A week Before the book group meeting! No one is more surprised than me...

Thought this could have done with some pruning, but a fascinating look at life in Cuba after Russia collapsed. A mathematician gets caught up in a plan to sell a rare document documenting the real invention of the telephone, years before Bell. Things gets very complicated when she falls for one of her co-conspirators.
